Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah emphasised the government’s dedication to the victims of recent floods, confirming that ensuring the safety of every citizen is the utmost priority. These comments were made on Saturday as the official death toll from flash floods in central Nepal reached 675, with over 2,400 individuals reported missing. Search and rescue operations are ongoing as more bodies continue to be recovered from the affected areas.

In a message shared via social media, Shah expressed deep concern regarding the significant loss of life and property resulting from the floods. He detailed the devastating impact of the disaster, particularly in districts such as Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading. To address these challenges, the Prime Minister announced enhancements to search, rescue, and relief initiatives, stating that the government is mobilising all available resources to protect citizens’ lives.

Shah underlined the importance of the state’s responsibility, indicating that all mechanisms are being mobilised to ensure safety. He reported progress in evacuation efforts, with 7,514 individuals successfully rescued by both air and land methods by Saturday evening. Specific rescue operations were carried out for 279 people trapped at various hydropower project sites, with further efforts underway to assist remaining individuals.

International Cooperation and Resources Deployed

According to the Prime Minister, Nepal is leveraging the expertise of both Indian and Chinese rescue teams, who are working alongside the Nepal Army to facilitate rescue operations. Shah disclosed that a total of 16 helicopters, sourced from both the Nepal Army and private companies, are engaged in rescue missions, with 236 flights executed thus far.

Additionally, the government has deployed 18,708 security personnel, which includes members of the Nepal Army, to support search and rescue operations across the affected regions. The Prime Minister acknowledged assistance from the international community, enhancing the capacity of Nepal’s rescue efforts.

Shah also highlighted the provisions made for displaced individuals, stating that temporary shelters accommodating approximately 3,500 people have been established in schools and community buildings. Authorities are providing food and essential supplies to those affected, while free medical treatment has been arranged for the injured. Psychological counselling services are also being offered to those requiring emotional support during this crisis.
