“Stole Phones, So We Chained Him”: Nagpur Parents Lock Up 12-Year-Old Son for 2 Months

The CSR Journal Magazine

A deeply disturbing case of alleged child abuse has surfaced from South Nagpur, Maharashtra, where a 12-year-old boy was reportedly chained and locked inside his home by his parents for nearly two months. The incident came to light after local residents alerted authorities, leading to a rescue operation by the District Women and Child Development Department along with the police.

Boy Found Shackled During Rescue

According to officials, the boy was found with iron chains and a padlock restraining his legs when the rescue team entered the house. He was reportedly standing on a bucket, unable to move freely. The operation took place around 3 pm, hours after the parents, both daily wage labourers, had left for work. Authorities said the child was allegedly tied up every day around 9 am before his parents departed.

Officials noted that the boy had visible wounds on his hands and legs, suggesting prolonged physical harm. Preliminary assessments indicate that the injuries were at least two to three months old. Investigators believe the minor was subjected to both physical and mental trauma during this period.

Parents Cite ‘Misbehaviour’ as Reason

During questioning, the parents reportedly claimed that their son had behavioural issues, including stealing mobile phones and frequently running away from home. They stated that he had dropped out of school and was difficult to manage. Instead of seeking professional or institutional support, the parents allegedly resorted to chaining him to prevent further incidents while they were away at work.

“The boy was shackled and locked. He was standing on a bucket when the rescue team reached his place. His parents, both daily wagers, used to tie him at 9am daily before going to work. The rescue took place at 3pm,” said a source, adding that injuries from being tied were at least 2 to 3 months old.

“The boy had a behavioural problem and was involved in petty thefts. Ajni police station was alerted twice about the boy’s abnormal behaviour. The parents got hassled over his repeated wrongdoings, especially theft,” said the report. “

“The parents already discontinued his education. They had no other option but to leave him alone while going for daily employment. Instead of seeking any help, they decided to tie the boy and leave him suffering until they returned from work.”

Authorities Take Action Under Juvenile Justice Act

A case has been registered against the parents under relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act. The boy has been moved to a safe facility and produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), where he is currently undergoing counselling and care.

Sources revealed that the local police station had allegedly been informed about the child’s situation on two earlier occasions, but no immediate action was taken. It was only after neighbours contacted the Child Helpline number (1098) that authorities responded swiftly.

Appeal to Public

The Child Protection Unit has urged citizens to report any suspected cases of child abuse, neglect, or violence immediately, stressing that timely intervention can prevent prolonged suffering.
