Mumtaz Baloch Reportedly Missing After Detention in Turbat Raises Concern

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Baloch university student, Mumtaz Baloch, has reportedly been detained by Pakistani security forces in Turbat and taken to an undisclosed location, raising new alarms over enforced disappearances in the region. This incident has drawn attention from various human rights organizations that monitor the situation in Balochistan. According to reports, Mumtaz, who was pursuing his studies in the fifth semester of the Balochi Department at the University of Balochistan, was apprehended on the third night of Eid from Kolwahi Bazaar in Apsar. His family claims there has been no official communication regarding his detention or his current condition since his disappearance.

Family’s Plea for Information

The relatives of Mumtaz Baloch have voiced their distress over the uncertainty surrounding his fate. They describe the lack of news as profoundly distressing and unjustifiable, given the serious implications of such enforced disappearances. The family is seeking answers and has publicly expressed their anguish about the situation, which has become emblematic of the broader human rights concerns in the Baloch region.

Role of Advocacy Groups

The case has garnered attention from the Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP), an organization that has been active in advocating for the rights of families affected by enforced disappearances in Balochistan. The VBMP has demanded that authorities ensure the immediate and safe return of Mumtaz Baloch. This organization has a history of documenting cases of enforced disappearances and has consistently highlighted issues related to alleged state abuses in the region.

VBMP’s Ongoing Protests

Additionally, the VBMP has maintained an ongoing protest camp in Quetta, which has now reached its 6,115th day. This camp serves as a platform for families of missing persons, activists, and supporters to unify their efforts in demanding accountability for enforced disappearances. According to VBMP officials, these enduring protests illustrate the systemic nature of the issue and reflect the community’s determination to seek justice.

Call for Collective Action

Ghulam Farooq, information secretary of VBMP, has urged families to provide documented evidence to substantiate claims of enforced disappearances. He emphasized that such participation is crucial for formally addressing these cases at both national and international levels. Farooq has called upon political parties, student organizations, and civil society groups to join efforts in documenting cases and amplifying the voices of affected families, reinforcing the need for collective action in the fight against enforced disappearances.
