MNRE Outlines India’s Push to Become a Low-Cost Green Fuel Hub

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Director of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Dr Prasad Chaphekar, stated that the Kandla Forum serves as a platform to illustrate India’s ability to emerge as a low-cost supplier of green fuels globally. During his address on October 7, 2023, he emphasised the significance of such a forum for exchanging ideas and fostering collaboration in the realm of green hydrogen and alternative fuels.

Chaphekar indicated that the discussions at the forum included a presentation on the operational potential of the Port of Kandla, along with detailing the initiatives launched by the Government of India. He noted the positive reception from participants and asserted that the forum’s engagement would play a crucial role in realising India’s ambitions in the green fuels sector.

Focus on Initiatives and Future Directions

The dialogue at the Kandla Forum centred around various initiatives associated with the Port of Kandla and the government’s mission to bolster these projects. Dr Chaphekar elaborated on the expected outcomes and forthcoming steps regarding stakeholder expectations and involvement with both the port and the mission.

According to Chaphekar, the aim of these discussions is to outline a clear roadmap for the initiatives being undertaken at Kandla, particularly concerning the development and implementation of hydrogen and green fuel projects. The conversations aim to address both immediate needs and long-term goals, ensuring stakeholder engagement and alignment with national objectives.

An integral aspect of the discussions was to unify efforts among those present, promoting understanding and collaboration among the various sectors represented, which include shipping, engineering, and clean energy.

Global Participation and Insights on Hydrogen

The Kandla Forum garnered participation from an international delegation, with notable contributions from Ivana Jemelkova, CEO of the Hydrogen Council. Jemelkova highlighted the significance of a collective approach to address global energy challenges using hydrogen technologies. She expressed satisfaction with India’s proactive stance in recognising hydrogen’s strategic importance for energy security and sustainability.

The Hydrogen Council, representing approximately seventy global companies, focuses on tackling some of the most pressing energy challenges associated with hydrogen. Jemelkova discussed how such multinational collaboration could significantly enhance efforts towards economic growth and environmental sustainability in India.

As an emerging hub for green energy, Kandla is set to lead initiatives in maritime decarbonisation, with the Deendayal Port Authority actively facilitating discussions around technology transfer and the development of sustainable projects. This positioning aligns with India’s targets for reducing carbon emissions and achieving Net Zero by 2070.

Significance of the Kandla Forum for Stakeholders

The Kandla Forum served as a pivotal meeting point for industry leaders from various sectors, attracting more than 200 senior executives from 62 member companies of the Hydrogen Council. This diverse representation underscores the Forum’s objective of creating a comprehensive ecosystem for green fuels and maritime decarbonisation.

The event was designed to encourage direct interaction between global companies capable of developing the green-energy value chain and the leadership of the Port of Kandla. The focus was on facilitating concentrated discussions that could lead to investments and partnerships in the emerging green technology arena.

Overall, the Kandla Forum was characterised by its potential for knowledge exchange and collaborative planning, serving as a vital component in enhancing India’s stature as a low-cost supplier of green fuels on the global stage. The discussions and initiatives stemming from the forum aim to propel both regional and international advancements in sustainable energy practices.
