Ministry of External Affairs Sets Up Control Room, Helpline Amid Middle East Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has created a dedicated control room to aid Indian citizens impacted by the escalating tensions in West Asia and the Gulf region. This decision comes amid increasing security issues as conflicts in the area intensify. The MEA announced the establishment of the control room on Wednesday, emphasizing its role in addressing the needs of Indians caught in the crisis.

PM Modi Evaluates Situation and Directs Assistance

In a recent statement, the MEA highlighted that approximately ten million Indian nationals reside in regions affected by the ongoing unrest. The safety and welfare of these individuals have been declared as the government’s highest priority. Furthermore, the MEA has provided several contact numbers for the control room, which operates from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The available helpline numbers include a toll-free option, 1800118797, as well as three additional lines: +91 11 2301 2113, +91 11 2301 4104, and +91 11 2301 7905.

Developments in the Region

Recent events in the Middle East have heightened tensions, with military actions involving Israel and Iran becoming increasingly pronounced. Reports indicate that Iranian forces conducted a substantial missile strike targeting a US airbase located in Bahrain. This has been followed by retaliatory actions, including airstrikes in Beirut by Israel. The complex dynamics involve multiple countries, intensifying diplomatic and military interactions in the area.

Consulate Initiatives for Affected Travelers

As tensions in the region impact travel, the Consulate General of India in Jeddah has announced efforts to assist Indian citizens traveling on specially arranged flights. The Consulate has indicated its commitment to providing full support to those affected by regional travel disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Consul General Fahad Ahmed Khan Suri and senior officials recently conducted a site visit at King Abdulaziz International Airport to assess the arrangements in place for Indian travelers leaving on non-scheduled flights to various destinations across India.

Impact of Military Operations

The escalation of military actions in the region has become one of the most significant developments of recent decades. Earlier, coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on February 28 resulted in the deaths of prominent figures, including the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has targeted locations associated with the US and Israel across several Gulf nations, such as the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, signifying the growing military hostilities.

Government’s Ongoing Monitoring Efforts

The MEA continues to monitor the evolving situation closely and is prepared to make decisions as necessary in the national interest. The Indian government is maintaining communication with respective governments in the region as well as important international partners. These measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure the safety of Indian nationals and manage the complexities arising from the heightened tensions in West Asia.
