The Ministry of Defence finalized agreements totaling Rs 858 crore on Friday aimed at enhancing India’s aerial defence and maritime surveillance capabilities. The contracts were split between the Indian Army and the Navy, focusing on improving defense systems and aircraft maintenance.

Agreement with Russian Firm for Air Defence

A significant component of the deals includes a contract valued at Rs 445 crore with Russia’s Rosoboronexport, which involves the procurement of Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems for the Indian Army. The addition of these missile systems is designed to bolster India’s multi-layered air defence network, equipping the military to better address threats from aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. This agreement highlights the ongoing strategic defence collaboration between India and Russia.

Indigenous Support for Navy Aircraft

In a related initiative, the Ministry of Defence also entered into a Rs 413 crore contract with Boeing India Defence Private Limited under the “Buy Indian” classification, ensuring that the agreement comprises 100% indigenous content. This contract focuses on the depot-level inspection and maintenance of the Indian Navy’s P-8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft. By facilitating these services domestically, the arrangement is expected to minimize reliance on external facilities and enhance the operational readiness of the P-8I fleet.

Alignment with National Initiatives

The ministry emphasized that the collaboration aligns with government initiatives such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India, which are aimed at enhancing domestic capabilities in defence manufacturing and support services. The contracts were officially signed at Kartavya Bhawan-2 in New Delhi, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh along with senior officials from the ministry.

These agreements are seen as pivotal steps in strengthening India’s defence landscape, particularly as the country seeks to modernize its military capabilities while fostering self-reliance in defence production.
