The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the signing of a contract worth Rs 810.79 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) dedicated to the acquisition of 160 Satellite Smart Anti Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This agreement was made official on September 20, during a ceremony held in New Delhi, with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in attendance. The contract falls under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category, highlighting the focus on enhancing indigenous defence capabilities.

Technical Specifications of SAT-SAAW

The SAT-SAAW is a precision-guided air-to-ground glide bomb that can be deployed from various aircraft platforms, including Jaguar, Hawk, and Su-30 MKI. These weapons are designed to effectively neutralise enemy airfields from considerable distances, thereby increasing operational efficiency for the IAF. According to the Ministry of Defence, the SAT-SAAW has been entirely indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

This advanced weapon system boasts an indigenous content of 60 per cent, which includes several critical subsystems such as the Initial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse, and Twin Store Carrier. The development and deployment of these systems are expected to significantly contribute to the Aatmanirbharta initiative, focusing on self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
