Mathura: Boat Accident in Yamuna River Claims Ten Lives

A tragic boat accident occurred in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the deaths of at least ten individuals. The incident took place on the Yamuna River near Keshi Ghat on February 1, 2025. Reports indicate that the vessel, which was carrying approximately 25 to 27 passengers, collided with a pontoon bridge at around 3.15 PM. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the boat struck the bridge, leading to the unfortunate event.

Authorities have initiated rescue operations, and local police have stated that the situation is currently being assessed. The Deputy Inspector General of Police for Mathura, Shailesh Kumar Pandey, confirmed that ten bodies have been retrieved from the site. Rescue teams, including personnel from the Fire Services and local divers, are actively working to locate individuals who are still unaccounted for.

Rescue operations are reportedly being supported by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), who are en route to assist in the search efforts.

Superintendent of Police for the Rural area, Suresh Chandra Rawat, confirmed the rescue of 22 individuals who were subsequently transported to local hospitals for medical attention. Efforts to ascertain the complete number of individuals involved are ongoing. The SP highlighted the necessity of determining how many people are safe and how many may have perished in the accident.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the pontoon bridge was undergoing essential repairs at the time of the collision. Rawat indicated that the accident is suspected to be connected to the ongoing maintenance work, emphasising that the bridge was in a state of disrepair during this time.

Local authorities are prioritising the welfare of those affected, with an emphasis on medical assistance for the injured. Detailed assessments are being conducted to determine the full extent of the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the victims’ families and wishing a swift recovery for those injured. He noted the importance of local administration’s involvement in providing necessary assistance.

Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the event as “extremely tragic.” He outlined that officials have been instructed to be present at the site to facilitate rescue operations and ensure adequate medical care for the injured individuals. Adityanath also conveyed his condolences to the families mourning their losses.

The Chief Minister emphasised the need for prompt action and support, hoping for divine strength for the bereaved families as they navigate their grief. Local authorities remain committed to managing the aftermath of this devastating event and providing necessary resources to the affected community.
