Tensions erupted in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district after a video circulating on social media allegedly showed a man sexually assaulting a cow. The incident, reported from the Damjipura area on Sunday, led to widespread anger among local residents and religious groups, quickly escalating into violent protests.

According to police officials, the cow involved in the incident reportedly belonged to the accused. After the video surfaced, demonstrations were organised, demanding immediate action. Authorities confirmed that the accused was detained soon after the complaint was received.

Protests Turn Violent

What began as a protest soon descended into chaos as a large crowd vandalised property and set several establishments on fire. A puncture repair shop allegedly linked to the accused was among the first targets. The violence later spread to other shops, including an electrical store, salon, mobile hardware outlet and an auto parts shop.

Fire brigade teams were deployed and managed to control the blaze after prolonged efforts. While no injuries or deaths were reported, officials said property damage ran into several lakh rupees.

Widespread Damage Reported

Police estimates suggest that at least seven shops were torched during the unrest. In addition, four cars, four motorcycles and one residential house were vandalised. Panic gripped the locality, with some families reportedly leaving the area temporarily out of fear.

Authorities stated that rumours and misinformation circulating online contributed significantly to the rapid escalation of violence.

Police Action and Security Measures

Betul Superintendent of Police Virendra Jain said law enforcement agencies acted promptly by detaining the accused and deploying additional forces from nearby districts. Senior administrative and police officials visited the affected area, appealed for calm and increased security in sensitive zones.

Investigations are underway not only into the alleged assault but also into the arson and vandalism. Police said individuals involved in the violence are being identified and will face legal action based on evidence.

Situation Tense but Under Control

Local representatives confirmed that efforts are ongoing to restore normalcy. While the situation remains tense, authorities maintain that law and order are currently under control, urging residents to avoid rumours and cooperate with the investigation.
