Mammootty’s Legacy Enters History Syllabus at Kerala’s Maharaja’s College

Malayalam cinema’s beloved icon, Mammootty, has now earned a rare academic tribute. With a career spanning over five decades, his contribution to the film industry has been recognised in a unique way — his cinematic journey has been added to the BA Honours History syllabus at Maharaja’s College, Kochi.

At 73, Mammootty continues to redefine versatility and dedication, proving that age is no barrier when it comes to passion and excellence. His remarkable legacy will now be studied by second-year history students under a newly added chapter titled “History of Malayalam Cinema.” The inclusion was proposed by the college board and acknowledges both his immense impact on Indian cinema and his status as a distinguished alumnus of the institution.

Recently, Mammootty’s reduced public appearances sparked rumours about his health, including unverified claims of a cancer diagnosis. However, these speculations were put to rest by Rajya Sabha MP and close friend, John Brittas. Speaking to Reporter TV, Brittas clarified, “Mammootty is dealing with a minor health issue and is undergoing treatment. He’s doing well — I spoke to him over the phone recently.” He added that although they usually don’t discuss personal matters, they’ve become more open in recent times.

On the work front, Mammootty was last seen in Bazooka and Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse — both films received a decent response at the box office and are now awaiting their OTT release.

He is currently shooting for Patriot, an ambitious project directed by Mahesh Narayanan, where he shares screen space with Mohanlal and Nayanthara. The veteran actor shows no signs of slowing down, continuing to inspire generations on and off screen.
