Mamata Banerjee Criticises Narendra Modi at Eid Meet, Calls for Harmony

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kolkata’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee utilized a prominent Eid congregation on Red Road to criticize Prime Minister Narendra Modi, labeling him the “biggest infiltrator.” During her speech on Saturday, she highlighted the contradictions she perceives in Modi’s actions, noting his diplomatic gestures abroad contrasted with the communal narrative he promotes within India. Banerjee stated, “We will not give up our rights to Modiji. He goes to Saudi Arabia and shakes hands there. I respect all countries but I am proud of my own. You seem to forget everything when you shake hands abroad but, when you return to India, the Hindu-Muslim narrative begins again.”

Comments on Voter Roll Disputes

Banerjee’s commentary also addressed the contentious issue of voter roll deletions, which she linked to the State Identification Register process. She revealed that she has taken her concerns to both the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court, expressing her hope that citizens’ rights will be safeguarded. “I will stand by the people of Bengal – across religion, caste, and creed – like family,” she affirmed, emphasizing her commitment to inclusivity.

Emphasis on Social Harmony

During her speech, the West Bengal Chief Minister portrayed the state as a model of social cohesion, asserting that individuals from various backgrounds coexist peacefully. “Bengal believes in unity. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians – everyone lives together here. We will not allow anyone to break this social fabric,” she declared.

Allegations Against BJP

Banerjee also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to exert control over the state’s administration, alleging an “undeclared President’s rule” leading up to the upcoming assembly elections on April 23 and 29. She criticized the BJP for allegedly removing officials and replacing them with party loyalists, referring to the party as comprising “thieves, robbers, goons, and gaddars (traitors).” She added a motivational phrase, saying, “Those who fear, die. Those who fight, succeed.”

Remarks on Political Betrayal

Without directly naming him, Banerjee referenced perceived betrayal by Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir, suggesting there were efforts to divide votes with BJP’s assistance. In a cultural touch, she quoted a line popularized by the film “Coolie,” implying that ultimate outcomes are determined by a higher power.

Call for Unity in Celebrations

Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and Diamond Harbour MP, reinforced the theme of unity, encouraging communities to come together in celebration of each other’s festivities. This appeal for harmony amid diversity aligns with the overarching sentiments expressed by the Chief Minister during her address.
