Lionel Messi’s Jersey Sells for Six Times the Price of Cristiano Ronaldo’s at Auction

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent auction featuring football memorabilia showcased a clear standout, with Lionel Messi’s jersey from his time at Barcelona achieving a final bid of $66,107 (Rs 56.4 lakh). In contrast, a jersey worn by Cristiano Ronaldo during his tenure at Real Madrid sold for $10,601 (Rs 9.05 lakh). The items were part of the collection of Rod Thornley, a former masseur for Manchester United, who was closely associated with the club’s senior team.

The Messi jersey stands out not only for its price but also for its unique backstory. Thornley had secured the jersey through a personal request to Gerard Piqué, prior to Barcelona’s visit to Old Trafford in 2012. This request illustrated Thornley’s long-standing connections within the sport, as he reached out to Piqué just days before the match.

Following the end of the game, Thornley was escorted by Piqué to the Barcelona dressing room, where Messi was still wearing the iconic shirt. Messi graciously removed the jersey, signed it, and directly handed it to Thornley, creating a moment filled with personal significance.

Comparison of Messi and Ronaldo’s Jerseys

The appeal of Messi’s jersey can be attributed to a combination of factors beyond its mere association with the football star. It was not only worn during a match but also bore Messi’s signature and was accompanied by a story linking two of football’s most notable clubs. The emotional context of how the jersey was obtained increased its desirability among collectors.

In stark contrast, Ronaldo’s jersey from the 2014-15 season, while still valuable, did not carry the same match-worn distinction. Unlike Messi’s shirt, Ronaldo’s was issued for a match but was not worn in play. Nevertheless, it included a personal message for Thornley, which did add a layer of significance to the item.

The environment of the auction demonstrated a notable difference between the two pieces of memorabilia, with Messi’s shirt being in substantially higher demand, resulting in a final price that was well over six times that of Ronaldo’s piece.

Other Notable Items in the Auction

The auction also featured various other notable items related to Manchester United legends. For instance, a shirt worn by Ryan Giggs during United’s 4-0 victory over Olympiacos in the Champions League back in 2002 sold for $10,103 (Rs 8.62 lakh). This highlights the ongoing interest in memorabilia associated with the club’s gloried past.

Additionally, Paul Scholes’ match-issued shirt fetched $4,585 (Rs 3.91 lakh), while a jersey prepared for David Beckham sold for $3,884 (Rs 3.32 lakh). Other items included Nicky Butt’s shirt, which went for $2,720 (Rs 2.32 lakh), and Gary Neville’s shirt, which concluded at $1,758 (Rs 1.50 lakh).

Ultimately, the final results of the auction clearly indicated that Messi’s Barcelona jersey dominated the bidding landscape, far exceeding the final sales of other jerseys and solidifying its status as a sought-after piece of football memorabilia.
