Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Command, will retire from the Indian Army on March 31, marking the end of his notable military career that has lasted over 40 years. He was commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of the Rajput Regiment in June 1986 and has since served in various challenging operational scenarios such as the Siachen Glacier, the Line of Control, and the Line of Actual Control.

Before assuming leadership of the Western Command on July 1, 2023, Lt Gen Katiyar held important positions including Director General of Military Operations at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army) and Commander of the elite 1 Corps. He also served as Colonel of the Rajput Regiment from February 2022 until December 2025, showcasing his extensive experience in diverse roles within the Indian Army.
Educational Background and Military Training
An alumnus of Sainik School Ghorakhal, Lt Gen Katiyar has also graduated from several prestigious military academies, including the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. He furthered his education at the Defence Services Staff College and the National Defence College, and he is recognized as a Distinguished Graduate of the National War College in the United States.
Significant Achievements and Awards
Throughout his military service, Lt Gen Katiyar has held various command, staff, and instructional roles. His command experience includes leading infantry units in Uri and Taksing, an Infantry Brigade along the western borders, and a Reserve Mountain Division along the northern borders. For his exemplary service, he has been honored with several decorations, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2025, the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal in 2025, and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2021.
