L Murugan Resigns From Government to Strengthen BJP in Tamil Nadu

The CSR Journal Magazine

Union Minister of State L Murugan has announced his resignation from the Narendra Modi-led government, stating his intention to focus on bolstering the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Modi, Murugan expressed his desire to prepare the party for the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

He held the portfolios of Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs during his tenure. In his correspondence, Murugan described his five years in the Union government as a significant honour. He also requested to relinquish his Rajya Sabha membership, indicating a complete commitment to his new role within the party at the state level.

He stated, “I have written a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing my desire to go to Tamil Nadu. I want to strengthen my party in the state and prepare the ground for the 2029 elections.” His resignation comes amid ongoing speculation regarding a potential reshuffle in the Union Cabinet, although no official announcements have been made concerning the timing of such changes.

Personal Background and Political Ideals

In his resignation letter, Murugan reflected on his humble beginnings, noting that he hails from a poor family in Kuser village, Tamil Nadu, where his parents worked as daily-wage labourers and cattle grazers. He emphasised that his journey into politics was not influenced by a political lineage, stating, “I do not come from a political family. I come from a very poor family.”

He added that his parents could never have envisioned their son serving in the government. Murugan credited his political inspiration to the nationalist ideals of prominent figures such as Mahakavi Subramania Bharati, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Syama Prasad Mookerjee. He began his political journey by joining the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during his college years.

Throughout nearly three decades with the ABVP and BJP, he has adhered to the guiding principle of “Nation First, Party Next, Self Last.” His political career has included roles such as vice-chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and a member of the Rajya Sabha. He joined the Union Council of Ministers in July 2021, marking a significant milestone in his political journey.

Contributions to Tamil Nadu

In his letter, Murugan acknowledged Prime Minister Modi’s efforts in promoting Tamil culture and supporting various development initiatives in Tamil Nadu. He highlighted key projects, including the expansion of the Chennai Metro, Tuticorin Port, and the redevelopment of railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

He also mentioned the installation of the Sengol in Parliament and initiatives like Kashi Tamil Sangamam, which have enhanced recognition of Tamil heritage. Murugan noted that PM Modi has been proactive in addressing issues concerning the safety of Tamilians in conflict zones and the welfare of Indian fishermen.

He recalled the Prime Minister’s visits to his home for Pongal celebrations, which he described as significant moments in his political life. Expressing his commitment to the BJP, Murugan stated that the party’s recognition of grassroots workers has provided him with opportunities he had not anticipated. He aims to travel extensively across Tamil Nadu, engage with party workers, and expand the BJP’s presence in the state.

He expressed his hope to convey the message of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’ to the people and strengthen the party’s contribution to the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Murugan concluded his letter by stating that the enthusiasm and support he observed during PM Modi’s recent visit to Tamil Nadu have reinforced his belief in the potential for greater achievements in the state.
