The parents of the victim in the high-profile RG Kar Medical College & Hospital case have dismissed the defamation lawsuit filed against them by Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh, vowing to continue their relentless pursuit of justice for their daughter. In a show of defiance, they stated they might not even attend the court hearing, viewing the legal action as a mere tactic to intimidate and divert them.
This development adds another layer to the ongoing legal and political battle that has emerged from the tragic death of the young doctor, referred to as “Abhaya” by the media. The defamation suit was initiated by Ghosh following accusations made by the victim’s father.
Parents Remain Unfazed by Legal Challenge
Responding to the legal notice, the victim’s father remained resolute. “We received the notice today. We are simply not giving it any importance. Let them do what they want,” he declared. “Our fight is for our daughter’s justice. These are not matters to be concerned with. This is an attempt to harass us.”
The victim’s mother, while refusing to name the TMC spokesperson, offered a sharp rebuke. “He is the spokesperson for the Trinamool party, but I do not wish to utter his name. I had heard his father was a doctor at R.G. Kar. Out of respect for his father, I will say that he is a disgrace to his father. He would not have pursued us in this manner during our time of grief,” she said.
The family’s legal counsel will ultimately advise them on their appearance in court.
Ghosh Demands Proof in Court
Kunal Ghosh, on his part, has publicly challenged the victim’s father to substantiate his claims in court. “He or his lawyer must be present on September 11th. He should come himself. I will be there,” Ghosh stated. “He goes everywhere else. If he doesn’t come and say it himself, I will assume someone is coaching him. He can say whatever he is taught. We will see about the grounds of sympathy. That is not how it works. You must come yourself. I will be there. You will have to prove that Kunal Ghosh went to the CGO complex and settled the matter.”
The Crux of the Defamation Suit
The defamation case stems from remarks made by the victim’s father to the media following a protest march. He had alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had been compromised by the state government. “The CBI has taken money and suppressed the investigation. The state government has paid the CBI. Kunal Ghosh went to the CGO Complex and ‘settled’ everything by paying money,” the father had claimed.
It was in response to these allegations that Kunal Ghosh filed the defamation suit at the Bankshall Court on August 20, demanding that the victim’s father provide evidence to support his serious accusations. The case has now set the stage for a courtroom confrontation, adding a new dimension to a case that has already seen significant public and political attention.
