Kohli’s Advice Helped Me Play Freely: Padikkal After RCB Victory

The CSR Journal Magazine

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) began their IPL 2026 campaign in style with a thrilling four-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, powered by a stunning partnership between Devdutt Padikkal and Virat Kohli.

Chasing a daunting target of 202, RCB completed the chase in just 15.4 overs, registering the fastest successful 200-plus run chase in IPL history. The victory was built on a blistering 101-run stand between Kohli and Padikkal, which came off just 45 balls and dismantled SRH’s bowling attack.

Padikkal, Kohli Power Record Chase

Padikkal was the standout performer, smashing 61 off just 26 balls at a strike rate of over 230, with seven fours and four sixes. Kohli, at the other end, played the perfect anchor, remaining unbeaten on 69 off 38 balls.

The duo took control of the chase after an early setback, ensuring that SRH never regained momentum. Skipper Rajat Patidar added a quickfire 31 off 12 balls to finish the job in emphatic fashion.

Earlier, SRH had posted a competitive 201/9 after recovering from a shaky start. Ishan Kishan led the charge with a brilliant 80 off 38 balls, while Aniket Verma chipped in with a rapid 43. For RCB, Jacob Duffy and Romario Shepherd picked up three wickets each.

Kohli’s Simple Message To Padikkal

Speaking after the match, Padikkal revealed that Kohli gave him a clear and straightforward role when he walked out to bat.

“When I came out to bat, Virat bhai’s only instruction was to keep the run-rate up and put pressure on the bowlers. My job was to take risks while he anchored the chase,” Padikkal said.

He added that Kohli’s presence at the crease helped him play with freedom and confidence, allowing him to take calculated risks without worrying about the overall situation.

“His presence took the pressure off me and let me play freely. Even after losing Phil Salt early, we knew it was important to stay aggressive so SRH wouldn’t get a chance to come back,” he said.

Padikkal also pointed out that RCB were confident of chasing the target, given their assessment of SRH’s bowling attack.

Evolution Of Padikkal’s T20 Game

The young batter credited RCB head coach Andy Flower and mentor Dinesh Karthik for helping him evolve as a T20 player, both technically and mentally.

“It wasn’t just technical; it was mental as well. I needed to believe that I can play this aggressive brand of cricket,” Padikkal said.

He highlighted how T20 cricket has evolved significantly since his debut in 2020, requiring players to adapt to a more attacking style of play.

According to Padikkal, the guidance from Flower and Karthik has been instrumental in building his confidence and enabling him to embrace a fearless approach at the crease.

Perfect Start For Defending Champions

The win marks an ideal start for defending champions RCB, especially at their home ground, which Padikkal described as “special” for the team and its fans.

With a record-breaking chase and strong individual performances, Bengaluru have sent an early message to the rest of the league, showcasing both batting firepower and depth.

As the IPL 2026 season unfolds, RCB will look to build on this momentum, with the Kohli-Padikkal partnership setting the tone for what could be another strong campaign.
