Kim Jong Un Cites Iran Conflict to Justify North Korea’s Nuclear Strategy

The CSR Journal Magazine

During a recent address to the Supreme People’s Assembly, North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un articulated the rationale behind his country’s nuclear arms policy, citing the ongoing conflict involving Iran as evidence for the necessity of robust military deterrence. According to reports from the Korean Central News Agency, Kim accused the United States of engaging in “terrorism and invasions” across various regions, specifically referencing the current hostilities with Iran, although he did not mention US President Donald Trump by name.

Kim asserted that “dignity, interest and the final victory of a country can only be guaranteed by the most powerful might.” He emphasized that regardless of whether adversaries opt for confrontation or seek peaceful coexistence, North Korea stands prepared to respond accordingly. He reaffirmed his commitment to advance the nation’s “defensive nuclear deterrence” and maintain a “prompt and precise” response strategy to counter perceived strategic threats to the state as well as regional security. The North Korean leader declared that his country would continue to reinforce its status as a nuclear weapons state while actively countering provocations from what he termed “hostile forces.”

Heightened Tensions with South Korea

In his speech, Kim escalated rhetoric against South Korea, officially designating it as the “most hostile nation.” He stated that North Korea would thoroughly dismiss South Korea through explicit remarks and actions. He issued a stark warning regarding the potential for “merciless” repercussions should Seoul engage in actions deemed provocative by Pyongyang. This declaration reflects a significant heightening of tensions on the Korean Peninsula, which has seen fluctuating relations in recent years.

US-Iran Negotiations Continue Amid Hostilities

Simultaneously, US President Trump acknowledged ongoing negotiations with Iran, expressing optimism about reaching a peaceful resolution to the conflict. He noted that the situation for Iranian forces is dire, stating, “Look, their navy’s gone, their air force is gone, their communications are gone.” Trump claimed that the United States is in a dominant position militarily and suggested that a resolution was imminent, although he did not provide definitive timelines or details.

In contrast, the Iranian side has denied any reports of negotiations with the United States. Iranian officials assert that true peace can be achieved only when the US and Israel cease their military campaigns in the region. Despite the ongoing tensions, the Iranian military has continued its aggressive stance, with recent reports noting the commencement of wave 80 of retaliatory strikes. The situation remains complicated, with prospects for peace appearing increasingly distant in West Asia.
