Kharge Labels CEC Gyanesh Kumar A ‘Puppet’ Of The Modi Government During CWC Meeting

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge intensified his criticism of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, asserting that he serves as a “puppet” under the influence of the Modi government. This statement was made during the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held in New Delhi on Tuesday, amid ongoing disputes regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Kharge’s remarks called for the immediate removal of Kumar from his position.

Allegations were also made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that he has exerted pressure on the CEC. Kharge pointed out that Kumar’s credibility is undermined as even his fellow Election Commissioners reportedly do not trust his leadership. The discourse within the Congress reflects a broader concern about electoral integrity in India.

Reports indicated that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi have raised objections multiple times regarding electoral matters over the past ten months. However, the Election Commission stressed that differing viewpoints are a standard aspect of institutional discussions, and their final resolutions have received legal endorsement.

Demands by Kharge Regarding Electoral Processes

During the CWC meeting, Kharge laid out five specific demands aimed at reforming the electoral roll system and ensuring transparency in the electoral process. The first demand urged for full disclosure of all changes made to voter lists, calling for public access to this information.

Secondly, Kharge insisted that individuals whose names have been removed from voter lists receive comprehensive information regarding these deletions, alongside an opportunity for appeal. He also sought prompt provision of voter lists and relevant data to political parties in an easily accessible format, adhering to established timelines.

A further demand from Kharge involved the establishment of an independent investigation into any reported discrepancies within the electoral rolls. Lastly, he called for greater transparency in electoral data to ensure that all political parties and voters are adequately informed, thus maintaining a fair environment for elections.

Concerns Over Electoral Integrity

Kharge raised apprehensions regarding the integrity of the voter lists, alleging that names are being systematically removed as part of a “conspiracy” orchestrated by the BJP and the current government. He emphasised that such actions undermine the fundamental democratic tenet that ensures every eligible citizen’s right to vote is preserved.

Stressing the significance of voting rights, Kharge referenced remarks made by B.R. Ambedkar, arguing that the ability to vote is a cornerstone of democracy and should not be arbitrarily denied to any eligible citizen. He further expressed concern that the introduction of changes to Form 6, used for new voter registrations, was aimed at creating barriers for young voters.

Comparing these changes to past political shifts, Kharge contended that the current government’s approach to youth engagement in the electoral process reflects a troubling trend that could disenfranchise younger generations. He cautioned that such actions are antithetical to democratic values and could significantly affect the political landscape.

Kharge underscored the need for the Election Commission to fulfil its role as a guardian of voters’ rights, arguing that it has instead strayed from its mission. He raised issues regarding the trustworthiness of the CEC, questioning how the public can rely on leadership that faces dissent from within its own ranks.
