Karnataka Prison’s DIG Arrested for Allegedly Using Fake SC Order to Release Life Convict

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Karnataka police have detained M Somashekar, the Deputy Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services, in connection with the alleged illegal release of a life convict. This incident reportedly occurred due to the use of a forged Supreme Court order. Somashekar was serving as the Chief Superintendent of Bengaluru Central Prison in 2018 when the incident took place. His arrest occurred on October 4, after which he was presented before a court and subsequently remanded to police custody for further interrogation.

Background of the Case

The situation relates to the release of a convict named Shankar A, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment in a kidnapping-for-ransom case by a Fast Track Court in 2004. Shankar A had been fined Rs 10,000 and had made unsuccessful appeals to both the Karnataka High Court and the Supreme Court to overturn his conviction.

On November 2, 2018, a document purporting to be an order from the Supreme Court was allegedly produced, which facilitated Shankar’s release from Bengaluru Central Prison on November 13, 2018. Investigations by the police have revealed that a counterfeit copy of the Supreme Court order was created, leading to the unlawful release of the convict.

The matter came to light after the Superintendent-in-charge of Bengaluru Central Prison lodged a complaint with the Parappana Agrahara police station on May 20, 2026. Following this, an inquiry was initiated to reveal the details surrounding the release. During the investigation, authorities discovered that Somashekar allegedly did not cooperate with law enforcement and was accused of withholding crucial information related to the case. His actions led to further scrutiny, culminating in his arrest on October 4.

Involvement of Other Officials

Moreover, the investigation included questioning Shankar’s wife, who reportedly made accusations against Somashekar and other officials concerning the dubious nature of her husband’s release. The ramifications of the inquiry may extend beyond just Somashekar, as further investigation into the prison’s administrative functions continues.

The case has highlighted potential lapses in the prison system and raised questions regarding the processes involved in inmate release. The police are pursuing further leads to understand the broader implications of this incident on the Karnataka prison administration. Law enforcement authorities are continuing their investigations to ensure accountability for all individuals involved in the alleged forgery and wrongful release.

The inquiry aims to piece together the circumstances that allowed such a legal breach to occur and to identify any additional complicity among other prison officials. As Somashekar remains in police custody, the ongoing investigation is expected to reveal more details in the coming days. The implications of this case could prompt a re-evaluation of protocols regarding inmate releases in Karnataka and may lead to broader reforms within the prison system.

The state government is expected to monitor the developments closely, given the significant nature of the allegations against a high-ranking official. Community reactions to this case will likely fuel discussions on justice and accountability within the correctional system in India.
