Karnataka CM Shivakumar Pledges Protection of Voting Rights Ahead of Oct 12 Delhi Protest

The CSR Journal Magazine

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has asserted that the state government is committed to safeguarding the right to vote for every citizen. His comments come ahead of a planned Congress protest in Delhi scheduled for October 12. Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, near Kuppanna Park, he stated that in a democratic society, every individual’s right to cast a vote must be preserved. He emphasised that no citizen should face the threat of losing this fundamental right.

Shivakumar voiced concerns regarding alleged attempts to undermine voting rights, claiming that citizens across India are increasingly aware of the potential damage such actions could inflict on democracy. He remarked on the necessity of protecting these rights, asserting that every citizen’s vote is crucial for the health of the democratic system.

Congress’s Historical Role and Current Responsibility

The Chief Minister articulated that the struggle to protect voting rights transcends the Congress party and the Karnataka government. He noted the historical significance of the Congress in India’s independence and the formation of its democratic framework. “Our party has a legacy of fighting for freedom and democracy, and we see it as our responsibility to ensure that every citizen retains their voting rights,” he declared.

Shivakumar pointed to the need for vigilance in safeguarding the four foundational pillars of democracy, namely the Legislature, Executive, Judiciary, and Press-Media. He condemned the recent restrictions placed on individuals trying to travel to Delhi, alleging that the measures compromise democratic participation. “Democracy should empower the people, not restrict them. These limitations are not acceptable,” he argued.

In advance of the protest, Shivakumar announced that senior Congress leaders, ministers, MPs, and MLAs will converge in the national capital. He confirmed his own participation in this significant demonstration, signalling unity among party members regarding the cause of protecting voting rights.

Spiritual and Communal Support for the Cause

The Chief Minister invoked the blessings of Goddess Chamundi during his address and referred to encouragement from spiritual leaders. He quoted a statement from the seer of Koppal Gavimath, expressing faith in divine assistance for their cause. “The spiritual strength we derive from our beliefs will sustain us in our efforts,” he added, highlighting the combination of faith and political action in their objective.

Additionally, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, has called upon young people, opposition parties, and civil society organisations to join in a march towards the Supreme Court on the same day. He urged citizens to overcome their fears, rallying them with the phrase “Daro mat,” which translates to “Do not fear.” This call for unity underlines a broader concern regarding the preservation of democracy and citizens’ rights in India.

As the political climate intensifies, the Congress party’s actions in the upcoming protest may serve as a focal point for those advocating for electoral integrity and citizen empowerment across the nation. With various stakeholders involved, the event on October 12 is poised to draw significant attention to the ongoing debates surrounding voting rights in India.
