Kanpur Girls Seek Help From DM Over Stolen Piggy Bank, Receive New One With Rs 1,000

The CSR Journal Magazine

In Kanpur, a heartwarming incident occurred during the Janata Darshan programme when two young sisters approached the District Magistrate to report the theft of their piggy bank savings. The event saw residents openly discussing their grievances with local officials, providing a platform for direct communication and assistance.

Accompanied by their mother, Shanno, sisters Iswa Khan and Mariyam Fatima shared their distress after realising that their accumulated savings had been taken. Initially, they had sought help from a nearby police station but were reportedly met with indifference, as their situation was labelled a minor domestic issue.

DM Takes Action After Hearing Their Story

Determined to seek justice, Iswa and Mariyam approached District Magistrate Jitendra Kumar Singh. During their meeting, Iswa explained her dedication to saving small amounts of money over time, including coins, pocket money, and gifts from relatives, all with the goal of purchasing a school bag.

Shanno claimed that the piggy bank was destroyed during a family dispute, leading to the loss of their hard-earned money. Compassionate towards the children’s plight, the District Magistrate referred the matter to the local police for further investigation.

However, what followed next was the most impactful part of the encounter. The District Magistrate called the girls closer and presented them with new clay piggy banks and school bags, taking the initiative to restore their lost savings by personally placing Rs 1,000 into each new piggy bank. This act transformed the girls’ expressions from despair to joy.

Significance of Saving Highlighted by DM

For Iswa and Mariyam, this moment was significant not merely because they met a senior official but because they felt heard and valued. Their mother, overwhelmed with relief, expressed gratitude that their concern had finally received serious attention.

Later, District Magistrate Singh remarked on the importance of nurturing a saving habit among children from a young age. He noted that even the simplest concerns, like a broken piggy bank, carry substantial emotional weight and warrant proper recognition.

This particular episode stood out amongst many complaints on that day, serving as a poignant reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding in governance. It illustrated how even seemingly trivial matters could resonate deeply and encourage a sense of community support and responsibility.
