JKSA Announces Return Plans for Students Stranded in Iran

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Jammu & Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has confirmed that approximately 100 Indian students, primarily from Kashmir, who are currently stranded in Iran will return to India on March 14 and 15 through commercial flights. This development comes amid escalating tensions in the region. According to National Convenor Nasir Khuehami, the students will first travel via land route to Armenia’s Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan before boarding their flights home.

Details on Students’ Travel Plans

Khuehami indicated that most students are set to leave on March 14, while the remainder will travel on March 15. The students have successfully secured their flight tickets and will begin their journey towards the Armenian border on Thursday from various locations in Iran, mainly from Urmia. The flights will be operated by Flydubai, connecting through Dubai, with all arrivals planned for Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in New Delhi.

Coordination with Government Authorities

The JKSA had previously reached out to External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and the Ministry of External Affairs for help in facilitating safe passage for these students. The appeal was meant to secure necessary permissions for them to travel through Armenia, which has been identified as the most feasible route for safe transit from northwestern Iran. Khuehami confirmed that the Ministry granted the relevant authorizations, allowing the students to proceed with their travel plans.

No Formal Evacuation Plan in Place

During discussions with senior officials such as the Foreign Secretary and the Iranian Ambassador to India, it was made clear that there is currently no official evacuation strategy for Indian students in Iran. The students returning are doing so via commercial flight arrangements. The Ministry of External Affairs has also advised these students against sharing their precise locations or personal details on social media platforms to maintain their safety and mitigate any potential risks.

Continuous Support for Students

Khuehami stated that the JKSA is in constant communication with the students and is actively working on their travel, security, and arrival logistics in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Jammu and Kashmir Government. He added that he has been liaising with Advisor to the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Nasir Sogami, to arrange deluxe AC buses at IGI Airport for students returning to Kashmir on March 14, March 15, and subsequent days through Armenia and other routes.

Ongoing Monitoring of the Situation

Khuehami emphasized that the Association will maintain vigilance over the evolving situation and is dedicated to providing all possible support to ensure the safe repatriation of Indian students from the affected region.
