Jharkhand Students Conduct ‘Aabhaar Yatra’ in Ranchi Following Government Response

The CSR Journal Magazine

The event named ‘Aabhaar Yatra’ took place on August 19 in Ranchi, where students marched from Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium to Albert Ekka Chowk. This procession occurred just two days after the Jharkhand government conceded to several of the students’ demands, which notably included the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination. The rally served as a way for students to express gratitude to supporters and governmental authorities in light of their prolonged agitation.

The atmosphere during the march was filled with enthusiasm as students shouted slogans and carried the national flag. Many participants danced, let off firecrackers, and joyfully smeared gulal on one another. Prominent student leader Devendra Nath Mahato, known for engaging in a 16-day hunger strike, participated in the celebration alongside numerous supporters.

Implications of the Hunger Strike and Protest

Mahato conveyed that the lengthy protest, along with his hunger strike, played a crucial role in prompting the government to take substantive actions regarding the students’ concerns. He pointed out that the government had acted on matters concerning 45 examinations, ultimately cancelling 22 of them. Mahato described these developments as a significant measure in combating corruption, asserting that the administration’s decisions would disrupt the so-called “paper mafia” and “education mafia.”

Other student leaders, including Ravindra Paswan, Piyush Kumar, and Kunal Pratap Singh also featured prominently in the procession. The Aabhaar Yatra was highlighted as an important moment coming on the 26th day of the students’ protests, which focused on claims of irregularities in examinations and urged reforms in the state’s recruitment examination procedures.

Ravindra Paswan remarked that the government’s actions were a direct consequence of the students’ persistent efforts. Initially, the students had demanded a CBI inquiry into the alleged malpractices; however, given the government’s reservations on the issue, Paswan welcomed the decision to implement a judicial inquiry as an alternative.

Future Actions and Commitments from the Students

Piyush Kumar announced the suspension of their agitation following the government’s acceptance of their request to cancel the JSSC-CGL examination. He clarified that the administration had asked for 60 days to address the allegations, a timeframe the students agreed to honour. Nonetheless, Kumar cautioned that if concrete action was not taken against those implicated in corruption within two months, the students would resume a more vigorous campaign.

Kunal Pratap Singh reiterated that the movement had been momentarily paused rather than concluded. He conveyed that the students had decided to grant the authorities a two-month period out of respect for their position but warned that the protest would recommence with increased intensity should the government fail to act adequately.

Another student leader, Savita Kumari, highlighted the sacrifices made by protesters, including her personal experience of being away from home and undertaking a hunger strike for 16 days. While expressing gratitude for the government’s decisions, she affirmed that they would be ready to engage in another substantial protest if commitments were not fulfilled.

Conclusion and Acknowledgements

Student leader Rahul Kranti expressed appreciation for the solidarity shown by students and their guardians during the agitation. He acknowledged the government’s responsiveness to their demands, while also urging that the Letters Patent Appeal (LPA) regarding the TGT 2016 recruitment be retracted. Kranti noted the urgent need for teacher appointments in the state and emphasised the necessity of moving forward with these adjustments.

The Aabhaar Yatra signified not only a celebration of the students’ efforts but also a reminder for the authorities to uphold their commitments. Transitioning from weeks of protests and hunger strikes, this event encapsulated the collective spirit and determination of the student movement in Ranchi.
