The inauguration of Noida International Airport (NIA) at Jewar is anticipated to significantly alter travel dynamics within the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR). Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has long been recognized as the principal airport for both domestic and international flights. It stands as India’s busiest airport and ranks among the largest globally in terms of passenger volume. However, the increasing demand and congestion at IGI have underscored the necessity for a second airport in the region, hence the development of Jewar Airport. Instead of positioning itself as a replacement for IGI, Jewar Airport is designed to complement IGI, establishing a dual-airport framework for better service delivery in the region.

Current and Future Capacity Comparison

Currently, IGI Airport outpaces Jewar Airport regarding size and operational capacity. IGI accommodates nearly 79 million passengers annually, with more than 200,000 travelers passing through daily. Featuring three terminals and four runways, it is an established and highly efficient aviation center. Plans to enhance IGI’s capacity to approximately 125 million passengers in the near future are underway. Conversely, Noida International Airport is set to launch at a smaller scale, with its initial phase projected to serve around 12 million passengers annually through a single terminal. However, Jewar is designed with expansion capabilities, ultimately aiming for an annual capacity of up to 70 million passengers and potentially reaching 120 million by 2050. This evolutionary advantage is particularly significant, considering the spatial constraints faced by IGI due to its location in a densely populated setting.

Facilities and Efficiency: An Overview

IGI Airport is acclaimed for its premium amenities, which include upscale lounges and a diverse range of shopping and dining outlets, in addition to a robust passenger handling system. Despite its amenities, the high foot traffic often results in long waiting times, congested boarding areas, and delays during peak travel periods. In contrast, Jewar Airport is being developed with a focus on modern efficiency and passenger comfort. Its infrastructure features a 3,900-meter runway suitable for large aircraft, complemented by sophisticated navigation systems, including the Instrument Landing System (ILS), to ensure seamless operations, even in foggy weather conditions. Jewel Airport promises expedited processing times, aiming for a streamlined check-in and baggage drop experience in as little as 10 minutes through self-service kiosks and digital solutions, along with a layout designed to minimize congestion.

Connectivity: Strengths and Limitations

When considering connectivity, IGI Airport currently maintains a strong advantage. Its location in Delhi allows for excellent transportation linkages, including metro access via the Airport Express Line and an extensive road and rail network. Conversely, Jewar Airport, situated approximately 70–75 km from central Delhi, presently encounters challenges in this area. It is accessible via the Yamuna Expressway and neighboring highways, though metro and rapid rail connections are still in the planning stages. Enhanced connectivity is anticipated in the future, which will facilitate easier access to Jewar, but at present, IGI remains the more convenient choice for travelers.

Airlines and Network Development

IGI Airport serves as the primary hub for major airlines like IndiGo and Air India, providing an extensive array of domestic and international flights. In its initial stages, Jewar Airport is expected to begin operations with a more limited network, primarily covering domestic routes and a few international destinations. However, its lower operational costs could entice additional airlines, particularly low-cost carriers, as it expands. Over time, Jewar Airport’s network is anticipated to broaden, thereby offering passengers more travel options.

Synergy vs. Competition in the Aviation Sector

In the near term, IGI Airport is poised to maintain its leading position due to its existing scale, connectivity, and comprehensive network. Yet, Jewar Airport symbolizes the advancement of aviation infrastructure in the region. Instead of functioning as direct competitors, both airports are expected to complement each other. This dual-airport strategy aims to alleviate congestion, enhance the overall passenger experience, and respond to the growing demand for air travel in Delhi-NCR, ultimately translating to greater choices and improved facilities for travelers.
