Jairam Ramesh Slams Modi Govt over Rising Inflation, Says Essential Food Prices Crushing Household Budgets

The CSR Journal Magazine

Jairam Ramesh, General Secretary of the Congress party and Member of Parliament, has alleged that the Modi government is responsible for an escalating crisis affecting household kitchens. He claimed that the continuous rise in prices of essential commodities has resulted in families struggling to manage their budgets.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Ramesh stated, “It appears that the Modi government has launched an all-out assault on the common man’s kitchen. Household kitchen budgets have completely collapsed.” He emphasised that the government’s alleged policies are causing hardship for many families, asserting that the prices of key food items such as flour, pulses, and cooking oil have surged.

Ramesh further described the situation as dire, stating, “Due to the Modi government’s anti-people policies, kitchen budgets are in disarray,” highlighting the severe impact of rising inflation on everyday lives. He contrasted the struggles of ordinary families against the prosperous condition of a handful of wealthy capitalists.

Government Accused of Concealing Economic Challenges

Ramesh has also accused the central administration of prioritising the obscuring of economic realities rather than adequately addressing the inflationary pressures affecting citizens. He remarked, “Yet, instead of curbing inflation, the government is merely intent on concealing the truth.”

The Congress leader insinuated that rising costs have made basic meals increasingly unaffordable for the average person. He claimed that the government’s efforts to portray an image of economic stability amounted to mere “statistical jugglery,” which fails to reflect the genuine struggles of the populace.

He suggested that the government’s narrative does not align with everyday experiences, stating, “The common man’s meal is becoming increasingly expensive,” a statement that underscores his belief in the need for more transparent economic policies.

Electoral Implications as Elections Approach

As several state Assembly elections loom, Ramesh has targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly, suggesting that voters in states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur, and Goa will register their dissatisfaction at the polls. He stated, “Modi-ji, the public knows everything. The people who are bearing the brunt of this inflation will make you realise the true cost of essentials when the elections arrive.”

These comments come in light of broader economic discussions, particularly with the introduction of a new Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) framework by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This new policy stipulates that UPI transactions above Rs 2,000 will incur a fee of 0.4 per cent.

The updated MDR framework, set to come into effect from October 15, 2026, may further complicate financial transactions for individuals and small businesses already strained by high inflation. The revisions have sparked emerging conversations about the implications for consumers relying on digital payment systems.
