India-Flagged Ship With 14 Crew Members Hit Near Oman, One Seafarer Killed

The CSR Journal Magazine

An Indian sailor lost his life following an attack on an India-flagged cargo vessel off the coast of Oman. The incident occurred when the ship, which was carrying 14 Indian crew members, was struck by an unidentified aerial object while navigating near the Omani coastline. Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed the details of the attack, which took place on Monday.

The cargo vessel, identified as MSV Al Jusufi, was reportedly engaged in routine operations when it came under fire. The attack resulted in significant damage, prompting a swift response from local maritime authorities. Thirteen crew members were successfully evacuated and subsequently rescued by the Omani Coast Guard. Unfortunately, one sailor, identified as Gandhar Nahim Ajij from Gujarat, succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident.

Government Response

In the aftermath of the attack, Minister Sonowal expressed his condolences on social media platform X, stating he was “deeply saddened” by the loss of life. He extended heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased sailor. The Indian Ministry of Shipping and the Indian Embassy in Oman are reportedly in contact with local authorities to ensure that immediate assistance is provided to the surviving crew members.

Efforts are underway to facilitate the swift repatriation of both the surviving crew and the mortal remains of the deceased seafarer. The Ministry has assured that all necessary measures will be taken to support the affected families during this difficult time. The Indian government is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Omani officials to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident.

Despite the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, attacks on Indian-flagged vessels remain relatively uncommon. However, the recent escalation of hostilities in key shipping corridors around the Gulf has raised concerns among Indian mariners. The safety of seafarers operating in these waters has become a pressing issue, prompting calls for enhanced security measures.

Casualties Among Indian Seafarers

Recent government statistics indicate a troubling trend regarding the safety of Indian nationals working at sea. Since the onset of increased military actions involving the US and Israel against Iran in February this year, at least 22 Indian nationals have reportedly lost their lives. Among these casualties, 14 were seafarers, highlighting the risks faced by those employed in maritime professions.

This incident underscores the vulnerabilities that Indian seafarers encounter in volatile regions. The Indian government has been urged to take proactive steps to safeguard its citizens working abroad, particularly in areas affected by conflict. The maritime community is calling for enhanced protective measures to ensure the safety of crew members operating on Indian-flagged vessels.

As the investigation into the attack continues, the focus remains on providing support to the families of the deceased and the survivors. The Indian government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of its seafarers will be critical in addressing the challenges posed by maritime security threats in the region.
