ISRO to Launch Two New SPADEX Missions for Bharatiya Antariksha Station Preparation

The Indian Space Research Organisation is set to conduct two advanced orbital docking experiments, namely SPADEX-2 and SPADEX-3, as integral components of its long-term strategy to develop the Bharatiya Antariksha Station. These upcoming missions will build upon prior docking demonstrations and are designed to test essential capabilities for future human spaceflight and lunar exploration initiatives. Jitendra Singh shared details regarding these missions in Parliament, revealing that they are currently under design considerations and will replicate docking scenarios in varying orbital settings.

Significance of the SPADEX Programme

The SPADEX programme is pivotal in developing rendezvous and docking technologies essential for enabling spacecraft to meet, align, and connect in space. Mastery of these technologies is vital for various operations such as crew transfers, refuelling activities, and power exchanges. Successful validation of these technological capabilities will facilitate future operations like the docking of the Gaganyaan crew module with space stations and regular human spaceflight activities.

Details of SPADEX-2 Mission

SPADEX-2 is intended to focus on the docking and undocking processes of two spacecraft operating within a highly elliptical orbit, a challenging environment that is crucial for missions such as Chandrayaan-4. This mission will also explore sample transfer between the two modules, a significant capability that will aid in returning materials from the lunar surface.

Focus of SPADEX-3 Mission

SPADEX-3 will demonstrate docking procedures within a circular orbit, akin to conditions found in low Earth orbit. This mission serves as a precursor for docking operations aimed at the Bharatiya Antariksha Station. It will involve the docking of two pressurised modules utilizing the indigenous Bharatiya Docking System, an essential technology for crewed missions and extended durations in orbit.

ISRO has previously validated fundamental docking capabilities through earlier SPADEX missions.
