Overview of NVS-03 Satellite

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing to launch its navigation satellite NVS-03 on October 30. This event marks a significant milestone for the agency, as the satellite will be deployed aboard a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) rocket. The GSLV-F18/NVS-03 mission is scheduled for liftoff at 11:51 pm from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

NVS-03 represents the third satellite in India’s next-generation navigation system, which aims to ensure uninterrupted service under the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). This satellite is equipped with an indigenous atomic clock, along with additional procured atomic clocks, enhancing its operational capabilities. The inclusion of the L1 frequency band, alongside the existing L5 and S bands, enables the satellite to provide precise positioning and location information.

The navigation system is designed to cover the entire landmass of India and extend its services up to 1,500 km beyond the country’s borders. This expansion is expected to significantly improve navigation services for various applications, including transportation and disaster management.

Reasons Behind NVS-02 Satellite Failure

The previous satellite in this series, NVS-02, faced challenges during its launch on January 29, 2025. Although the GSLV-F15 rocket successfully placed the 2,250-kg satellite into its initial elliptical transfer orbit of 170 km x 37,785 km, it could not reach its final operational orbit. The failure was attributed to the onboard liquid-fuelled engine, which did not ignite during the necessary orbit-raising manoeuvre.

An investigation conducted by an ISRO Apex Committee revealed that the failure stemmed from an issue with the electrical signal reaching the pyro valve. This valve is crucial for opening the fuel and oxidiser lines required for engine ignition. The committee’s analysis indicated that at least one contact in both the main and redundant electrical connector paths had disengaged, disrupting the electrical circuit and preventing the engine from firing, despite the satellite’s backup systems.

This incident has prompted ISRO to review its protocols and enhance the reliability of its satellite systems. The findings from the investigation will likely inform future missions to ensure that similar failures do not occur again.

Understanding NavIC and Its Functionality

The Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) is India’s independent regional satellite navigation system, designed to provide accurate Position, Velocity, and Timing (PVT) information. The system aims to serve users across India and extend its reach approximately 1,500 km beyond the country’s borders. NavIC offers two types of services: the Standard Positioning Service (SPS) for civilian users and the Restricted Service (RS), which is an encrypted service for authorised users.

ISRO plans to deploy a total of five second-generation NavIC satellites, including NVS-01, NVS-02, NVS-03, NVS-04, and NVS-05. This initiative aims to strengthen the existing satellite constellation and ensure uninterrupted navigation services with enhanced capabilities. The first satellite, NVS-01, was successfully launched on May 29, 2023, marking a significant advancement in India’s satellite navigation technology.

The introduction of the L1 frequency band in the NVS series expands the range of navigation services offered, thereby improving the overall functionality of the NavIC system. This development is expected to enhance various applications, including transportation, agriculture, and emergency response, thereby contributing to India’s technological advancement in satellite navigation.
