IndiGo Tirupati-Hyderabad Flight Forced to Return Mid-Air Due to Technical Glitch

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Hyderabad-bound IndiGo flight was forced to return to Tirupati just minutes after takeoff on Sunday evening due to a technical snag, prompting the pilots to circle in the air for about 40 minutes before landing safely. The aircraft involved was an Airbus A321neo operating flight number 6E 6591.

According to Flightradar24, the plane took off from Tirupati’s Renigunta Airport at around 7:42 pm and was expected to land in Hyderabad by 8:30 PM. However, after reaching near Venkatagiri town, the aircraft took a U-turn and began circling in the airspace before returning to Tirupati Airport by 8:34 PM.

A representative from the airline, quoted by ANI, said: “All affected customers have been re-accommodated on the next available flights or given full refund against cancellation, as per their preference.” IndiGo also confirmed that necessary maintenance checks would be performed on the aircraft before it resumes service.

IndiGo Assures Safety, Offers Refunds

A spokesperson from IndiGo told media, “We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers and made all efforts to minimise it, including offering them refreshments and hotel accommodation. All affected customers have been re-accommodated on the next available flights or given a full refund against cancellation, as per their preference. At IndiGo, the safety of our customers and crew is our top priority.”

This flight was the last scheduled departure to Hyderabad from Tirupati that day. Following the cancellation, passengers were seen arguing with IndiGo ground staff, and videos of the confrontation were shared widely on social media.

In a separate incident earlier the same day, flight 6E 2696, which also operated on the Tirupati-Hyderabad route, experienced a similar technical problem shortly after its 6:19 am departure. It, too, had to circle briefly before returning to Tirupati. No emergency was declared in either case, and all passengers were reported safe.

IndiGo Schedules Extra Flight for Stranded Flyers

IndiGo has arranged an additional flight for stranded passengers, scheduled to depart the following morning at 8:20 am. As of now, the airline has not provided a detailed public explanation regarding the cause of the repeated glitches.

The recurrence of issues on the same route within a day has raised concerns. While the exact cause of the technical fault remains undetermined, the airline’s engineering team is currently investigating both aircraft.

These incidents occurred amid heightened sensitivity over flight safety in India. On June 12, an Air India aircraft tragically crashed near Ahmedabad, killing over 260 people. The incident has led to widespread scrutiny of Indian aviation safety standards.

Civil Aviation Minister Comments on Air India Flight Crash

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, commenting on broader concerns, stated on Sunday, “We will wait for the final report from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau before drawing conclusions.” He also addressed speculative coverage by some international outlets, saying, “I appeal to Western media not to speculate,” and emphasised that “The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has been able to decode the black box data in India.”

Just days before the Tirupati incidents, another IndiGo flight (6E 6271) from Delhi to Goa had to make an emergency landing in Mumbai due to a mid-air engine failure. A “full emergency” was declared and the A320neo aircraft landed safely at 9:52 pm. IndiGo later confirmed that a technical snag had been detected during the flight.

Though no passengers were harmed in Sunday’s twin disruptions, the situation has sparked renewed debate around aircraft maintenance practices and passenger safety across Indian carriers.
