‘India’s Tour of Bangladesh May Face Further Delays’: BCB Chief Tamim Iqbal

The CSR Journal Magazine

The possibility of postponing India’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh is currently under consideration as discussions between the cricket boards of both countries continue. The opening One Day International (ODI) is set for September 3; however, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has indicated that the dates may need to be adjusted. BCB President Tamim Iqbal stated that both boards are still in negotiations regarding the series schedule.

This series, which was already rescheduled from August 2025 to September 2026, consists of three ODIs and three T20 Internationals. Despite this, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to confirm the itinerary publicly, maintaining an air of uncertainty concerning the tour.

During a press conference in Dhaka, Iqbal mentioned that the two boards are considering the respective dates and that adjustments might be necessary. The BCB’s current flexibility in its domestic calendar reflects the ongoing deliberations over the series timing.

Domestic Calendar Flexibility

The BCB recently announced the Game Development Trophy, which will feature Under-17, Under-19, and Under-23 players. This tournament is scheduled to take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur from August 28 to September 9, overlapping with the proposed timeline for India’s tour. However, Iqbal assured that should the India series be confirmed, the domestic tournament could easily be relocated.

Iqbal stated, “This tournament is being held in Mirpur but it can be shifted to the Basundhara ground in two minutes. If the India series is locked and fixed, we will schedule it accordingly.” This flexibility indicates the priority given to the international series, should it receive the green light.

The proposed series has undergone numerous changes in its scheduling thus far. Originally planned for August 2025, it was postponed by a year. The BCB had announced a new arrangement for three ODIs and three T20Is across Dhaka and Chattogram, but the absence of a public confirmation from the BCCI keeps questions about the series alive as the start date approaches.

Complex Relationship Between Boards

The relationship between the BCB and BCCI has been complicated, particularly following earlier tensions surrounding the Kolkata Knight Riders incident involving Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman. Additionally, diplomatic strains arose when Bangladesh decided not to participate in the T20 World Cup in India. Nevertheless, there have been indications of improved relations since Iqbal’s appointment as BCB president.

Earlier this month, Iqbal travelled to India, where he reportedly visited the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, showing a willingness to foster better ties between the two boards. This rapprochement may be crucial for aligning schedules and confirming the upcoming series.

While the focus remains on the impending series against India, the BCB is also dealing with uncertainties regarding domestic tournaments and financial issues affecting the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Iqbal has signalled a cautious approach in proceeding with the BPL, prioritising financial stability over immediate tournament organisation.

Future of BPL in Doubt

Regarding the future of the Bangladesh Premier League, Iqbal has suggested that the tournament may not occur this year due to ongoing financial and administrative difficulties. He stated, “I don’t think BPL will be held this year. I don’t want to organise the BPL this way.” The BCB has reportedly incurred losses of approximately 40 crore Bangladeshi Taka, which is around Rs 31 crore, in the previous two editions.

In response to these issues, the BCB is actively working with franchises to resolve outstanding payments and bank guarantees. Iqbal emphasised the need for a stable financial model before venturing into another season, saying, “If it takes six, 12, or 24 months to do it properly, I will take that time.” As discussions about the India series continue, the BCB’s immediate priority remains securing a clear schedule.
