Indian Woman Dies After Air Ambulance Makes Emergency Landing in Dhaka Due to Technical Fault

The CSR Journal Magazine

An Indian woman tragically died following an emergency landing of an air ambulance in Bangladesh. The aircraft encountered a technical fault that reportedly caused its door to partially open while in flight. This incident occurred on Sunday, when the air ambulance was en route from Agartala to Kolkata, as per reports from local media and the Press Trust of India.

The Beechcraft King Air C90A, registered as VT-HYA, had seven individuals on board at the time of the emergency. The aircraft successfully landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at approximately 1.40 pm local time. Fortunately, all other passengers, including two pilots, a doctor, a paramedic, and two companions, were unharmed.

Details of the Emergency Landing

The aircraft reportedly developed a mechanical issue while climbing through an altitude of 12,000 feet. This malfunction led to the door opening mid-air, prompting the emergency landing. According to the state-owned BSS news agency in Bangladesh, the landing was executed without incident, ensuring the safety of those on board.

Upon landing, the patient, identified as 56-year-old Anjana Bhowmik, was immediately transported to Kurmitola Multicare Specialised Hospital. Medical personnel at the hospital declared her dead at 4.40 pm local time on the same day. The circumstances surrounding her death remain uncertain, with no definitive link established between the aircraft’s technical fault and her medical condition.

Md Riaz Uddin, the spokesperson for the executive director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, confirmed that the aircraft experienced a mechanical problem during the flight. He noted that the door opening was a direct result of this issue, which necessitated the emergency landing.

Response from Authorities

Bangladeshi authorities provided assistance to the air ambulance on humanitarian grounds, despite the aircraft lacking the necessary clearance for an international landing. This decision reflects a commitment to prioritising human life in emergency situations. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka played a crucial role in coordinating with Bangladeshi officials to facilitate the required diplomatic formalities for the incident.

The air ambulance, operated by India’s SKB Infracon Pvt Ltd, remained at Dhaka airport while authorities addressed the clearance issues. The cooperation between Indian and Bangladeshi officials underscores the importance of cross-border collaboration in urgent medical scenarios.

The situation has raised questions about the protocols in place for air ambulances operating internationally, particularly regarding clearance and emergency procedures. While the aircraft landed safely, the unfortunate death of Anjana Bhowmik has brought attention to the complexities involved in such operations.
