The ongoing Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026 has prompted the Indian and US Army forces to conduct significant training involving the M777 Ultra-Light Howitzer (ULH). This collaborative effort took place on September 17 at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges located in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The exercise included a comprehensive lecture and demonstration designed to improve joint operational efficiency and artillery tactics.

The demonstrated activities focused on key aspects such as the roles of personnel, gun deployment techniques, local defence coordination, and strategies for relocating to alternative positions during counter-bombardment situations. Notably, shoot-and-scoot drills were also included to enhance the resilience and adaptability of the forces during combat.

This training initiative serves not only as a platform for skill enhancement but also promotes the sharing of best practices between the two nations’ armies, further strengthening their military partnership.

Official Statements Highlighting Bilateral Cooperation

Earlier in the day, US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, remarked on the importance of the bilateral exercise. Commencing on September 15, Gor referred to India-US military collaboration as a “great partnership.” His comments were shared alongside a post from the US Pacific Command, which underscored the official opening of Yudh Abhyas 2026 with a ceremony on the same date.

The US Pacific Command’s communication emphasised that the exercise will span two weeks, concentrating on vital areas such as readiness and interoperability. The 22nd edition of this joint military training emphasises cooperative strategies that enhance defence capabilities between the two nations.

Major General Amaresh Gunjan, General Officer Commanding of the 14 Infantry Division, alongside Colonel Benjamin Jackman, Commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team from the 11th Airborne Division of the US Army, addressed participating troops. Each army has contributed 600 personnel to the exercise, illustrating the scale of this collaborative effort.

Key Focus Areas of the Training Exercise

According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, the exercise is being executed simultaneously in Auli, Uttarakhand, and the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan. The intent is to enhance military capabilities for conducting operations in mountainous and semi-mountainous regions, focusing particularly on infantry-led missions.

The training will incorporate the use of modern technology. Strategies involving drones and autonomous systems for surveillance and reconnaissance will be integral components. Additionally, demonstrations of contemporary weapon systems are planned for execution at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges, showcasing the latest advancements in military technology.

Subject Matter Experts from both the Indian and US armies are scheduled to engage in discussions regarding emerging technologies and trends in multi-domain warfare. This exchange not only highlights the technical aspects of modern combat but also signifies the commitment of both nations to bolster their defence capabilities through mutual learning and collaboration.
