Indian Railways Completes Kavach System Launch on Prayagraj–Kanpur Stretch

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian Railways has successfully initiated the deployment of the Kavach system on a crucial segment of the Delhi–Howrah corridor, emphasizing improvements in railway safety and efficiency. The Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system is operational across 190 route kilometers between Prayagraj and Kanpur. This enhancement aims to facilitate quicker train services at speeds of up to 160 km/h while minimizing the risk of human error.

Kavach was officially deployed on the Prayagraj (excluding) to Kanpur (excluding) section on March 22, 2026. The implementation was demonstrated using Train No. 14163, followed by a thorough footplate inspection from Subedarganj to Manauri station, conducted in the presence of senior railway officials to evaluate the system’s functionality.

Understanding the Kavach System

Kavach, developed domestically as part of the Make in India initiative, serves as an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) mechanism. Its primary objectives include preventing Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), enabling automatic brakes in scenarios of human oversight, and ensuring continuous monitoring of train movement. The system is engineered to significantly decrease the likelihood of accidents while enhancing reliability on busy railway lines.

Facilitation of Speed Up to 160 km/h

The introduction of this system paves the way for train operations at speeds reaching 160 km/h along this crucial route, which ranks among India’s most congested corridors. The Kavach system is expected to advance both the speed and safety of train travel, alongside improved overall operational effectiveness.

Initial Phase of Train Integration

In the initial phase, Kavach will be implemented on eight pairs of trains, which include Train Nos. 14113, 14114, 14163, 14164, 12307, 12308, 12417, 12418, 22437, 22438, 15003, 15004, 20433, 20434, and 12403. There are plans to progressively include additional services, such as Vande Bharat trains, as the system expands.

Pre-Commissioning Trials and Evaluations

Prior to the official rollout, Indian Railways conducted comprehensive testing, which involved trials using WAP-7 locomotives paired with various coach configurations, including a 20-coach Vande Bharat rake. The trials also featured passenger evaluations with Train No. 15003 (Chauri Chaura Express), demonstrating dependable performance. A total of over 20,000 kilometers worth of passenger trial runs were executed successfully.

Future Expansion Plans for the Kavach System

Before its latest rollout, Kavach Version 4.0 had already been implemented across 1,452 route kilometers on the Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Howrah routes. The next phase will involve the introduction of the system on the Ghaziabad–Tundla section as part of the Mission Raftaar initiative, aimed at enhancing train speeds throughout the network. The Kavach system represents a vital advancement towards safer and more efficient railway transportation in India, aimed at reducing reliance on manual operations and introducing additional automated safety measures.
