Indian Railways Approves Rs 432 Crore Electronic Interlocking Project for Eastern Railway

Indian Railways has given the green light to a substantial Rs 432 crore Electronic Interlocking project aimed at modernising the signalling infrastructure across the Eastern Railway network, specifically within the Asansol Division. This initiative encompasses 27 stations and cabins, including an Intermediate Block Signalling (IBS) location, operating on both the High Density Network (HDN) and the Highly Utilised Network (HUN).

The primary goal of this project is to enhance railway safety and streamline train operations by replacing outdated relay-based systems with advanced computer-based signalling technology. This upgrade is anticipated to accommodate increased traffic on one of India’s busiest railway corridors, ensuring a more reliable service for passengers.

By advancing the signalling systems, Indian Railways aims to significantly improve operational efficiency, providing a smoother travel experience. The initiative aligns with the railway’s broader strategy to upgrade signalling systems across critical high-density routes.

Signalling System Replacement and Technology Enhancement

The sanctioned project will involve the replacement of 28 relay-based interlocking systems. This includes 27 Panel Route Relay Interlocking (PIRRI) installations alongside one IBS installation, which will be substituted with modern Electronic Interlocking systems. These systems utilise computer-based technology to improve functionality.

Electronic Interlocking boasts numerous advantages over older relay technologies, including enhanced reliability, expedited fault detection, and more straightforward maintenance processes. Such improvements will foster operational flexibility, enabling trains to navigate high-traffic routes more efficiently.
