The Prithvi Festival, a significant cultural event in Mumbai, is set to return for its 48th year at the renowned Prithvi Theatre in Juhu. This festival, which showcases a diverse array of artistic expressions, will run for 16 days, from November 1 to November 16, 2026. It aims to bring together voices from various languages, including English, Hindi, Marathi, Tibetan, and Urdu, creating a vibrant tapestry of performances and workshops. The festival is expected to feature an extensive programme that includes premiere productions, live acoustic music, fringe showcases, and masterclass workshops.

This year’s festival is characterised by an ambitious expansion, reportedly featuring nearly double the number of new productions compared to previous years. Zahan Kapoor, a trustee of Prithvi Theatre, referred to this increase as a “problem of plenty,” expressing a desire to foster joy and togetherness among both artists and audiences. The festival’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement is evident in its programming and outreach efforts.

The festival’s identity is deeply rooted in its extensive network of creative collaborations, which include returning playwrights, directors, actors, and music collaborators. Kunal Kapoor, another trustee, emphasised the importance of mutual respect and appreciation in these partnerships, stating that it is a fundamental aspect of the festival’s ethos.

Featured Productions and Performances

During the festival, the main stage will host a diverse range of premiere plays that reflect contemporary themes and narratives. One of the highlighted productions is “27 Seconds,” an adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s memoir “Knife,” co-directed by renowned actors Naseeruddin Shah and Arghya Lahiri. This adaptation promises to engage audiences with its unique storytelling approach.

Another significant production is “Eklavya – The Wronged,” presented by FATS TheArts. This play offers a modern retelling of the Mahabharata, focusing on systemic caste-based exclusion, thus addressing relevant social issues. Additionally, “Ashant Prashant,” a dark comedy by D For Drama, explores themes of wounded masculinity and online radicalisation, providing a thought-provoking experience for viewers.

“Further enriching the festival’s offerings is “Eka Natacha Mrutyu,” a poetic Marathi monologue by Natakghar & The Box that delves into an actor’s confrontation with mortality. Akvarious Productions will present “The Crocodile,” a humorous tale about the interactions between actors and animals, while “Phayul,” a poignant drama by Tibet Theatre, portrays the Tibetan struggle for independence during the 1950s.

Additional Events and Workshops

In addition to the main stage productions, Prithvi House will serve as a venue for intimate fringe shows, NT Live screenings, and a variety of workshops. Esteemed artists such as Ratna Pathak Shah, Makarand Deshpande, and Kumud Mishra will lead these workshops, providing participants with unique insights into their craft. The festival will also feature acoustic music performances from notable musicians, including Louis Banks, Gino Banks, Pancham Nishad, and the Symphony Orchestra of India from the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA).

The Prithvi Festival stands as a testament to Mumbai’s rich cultural landscape, fostering connections among artists and audiences alike. With its diverse programming and commitment to artistic excellence, the festival promises to be a memorable celebration of creativity and collaboration. As the festival approaches, anticipation builds for what is expected to be an enriching cultural experience for all attendees.
