Indian Navy Rescues 20 Iranian Sailors from Somali Pirates

The CSR Journal Magazine

A video has emerged showcasing the Indian Navy’s successful rescue of all 20 crew members from the Iranian fishing vessel Azini, which had been hijacked by Somali pirates. The footage, recorded following a meticulously coordinated operation lasting over 48 hours, depicts the Iranian sailors on the upper deck of their vessel with their hands raised. This operation concluded on November 2, occurring more than 3,000 km from Mumbai in the Arabian Sea, with no reported casualties or injuries.

Indian Navy’s Tactical Response

The Azini was reportedly seized by an armed group of pirates earlier in October off the northeastern coast of Somalia. This hijacking posed a considerable threat to maritime security, raising concerns that the vessel could be used as a ‘mother ship’ for further pirate attacks on merchant vessels in the vicinity.

In response to this urgent situation, the Indian Navy deployed a warship along with a maritime reconnaissance aircraft to intervene effectively. Through persistent surveillance, the naval forces successfully located the hijacked vessel, tracked its movements, and implemented calibrated non-kinetic measures to restrict its mobility and prevent any escape attempts.

Additionally, Marine Commandos were deployed via a precision airdrop from an Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft, ensuring a rapid tactical intervention. The Indian Navy executed a swift operation that neutralised the pirate threat and facilitated the safe release of all crew members aboard the Azini. This operation has been described as a testament to the Navy’s operational readiness and capability to manage complex maritime security challenges.

Govt Officials Commend the Operation

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his congratulations to the Indian Navy for the successful execution of the operation. He praised the meticulous coordination and operational readiness demonstrated during the mission. Singh remarked that the swift localisation, interception, and safe release of both the crew and the vessel, aided by timely support from the Indian Air Force, illustrated India’s capacity to respond decisively to maritime threats in the region.

Singh further emphasised that the operation showcased India’s commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region. He noted that the coordinated response underscored the Navy’s high operational readiness and ability to address maritime threats effectively.

The successful rescue operation reflects the Indian Navy’s preparedness for complex maritime security missions and highlights India’s dedication to being the First Responder and Preferred Security Partner in the Indian Ocean Region. The Navy reiterated its commitment to protecting seafarers and ensuring the safety of vital maritime trade routes.

Iranian Embassy Expresses Gratitude

The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi expressed its appreciation for the Indian government’s efforts in securing the release of the 20 crew members. In a formal statement, the embassy commended the professionalism, courage, and effective coordination exhibited by the Indian Armed Forces during the operation.

The embassy highlighted that the successful rescue operation reflects India’s commitment to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and its role in saving lives beyond its borders. This incident not only reinforces the collaborative spirit between India and Iran but also underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing maritime security challenges.
