Indian Authorities Refute Claims of Bangladeshi Fugitives Entering Meghalaya

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian security forces and West Bengal Police have officially denied claims made by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) regarding the alleged escape of prime suspects in the Osman Hadi murder case into Indian territory. The discrepancy between the two nations’ reports surfaced after Bangladeshi officials suggested that the perpetrators had crossed the border into Meghalaya to evade arrest.

The Claims from Dhaka

On Sunday morning, during a press briefing at the DMP Media Center, Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Israil Mohammed Nazrul Islam stated that the primary accused in the killing of Inqilab Manch convener Osman Hadi, identified as Faisal Karim (alias Daud) and Alamgir Sheikh had fled through the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh.

The Bangladeshi official further claimed that two accomplices, Purti and Sami, who allegedly facilitated the illegal crossing, had already been apprehended by the Meghalaya Police.

Meghalaya Police Deny Arrests

In a direct contradiction to the DMP’s statement, high-ranking officials from the Meghalaya Police clarified to the media that no such operation or arrests have taken place.

“There have been no formal or informal discussions with the Bangladesh Police regarding this matter,” a senior officer stated. “We have received no names of suspects, nor have we taken anyone into custody in connection with this case.” The police further noted that they could not identify any individuals by the names provided by the Dhaka authorities.

BSF Labels Claims as “Baseless”

The Border Security Force (BSF), responsible for manning the international boundary, also dismissed the reports of infiltration.

Speaking on the matter, Inspector General of the Meghalaya Frontier, O.P. Upadhyay, emphasized that there is no evidence of a breach at the Haluaghat sector.

“We have no information regarding any infiltration from Haluaghat into Meghalaya. No complaints have been lodged, and the claims appear to be baseless and misleading,” Upadhyay stated.

Background of the Case

The murder of Osman Hadi has led to the arrest of nine individuals in Bangladesh so far. However, with the two main suspects still at large, the search has become a point of contention. While Dhaka insists the fugitives are on Indian soil, the categorical denial from both the BSF and Meghalaya Police suggests a significant communication gap or a lack of verifiable intelligence regarding the suspects’ movements.
