Indian Army Recalls 1971 US Support to Pakistan Amid Trump’s Tariff Attack on India

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Army shared a news clip dated August 5, 1971, highlighting how America had supported Pakistan and supplied weapons that eventually led to the Indo-Pak war. The caption read, “This day that year’s buildup of war – August 5, 1971.” This post clearly indicates the decades-long inclination of the US towards Pakistan.

The article stated that then Defence Production Minister V.C. Shukla, in a statement in the Rajya Sabha, revealed that both NATO powers and the Soviet Union were consulted regarding Pakistan’s arms build-up during its aggression in Bangladesh.
According to the article, France and the USSR denied providing arms support, but the US and China had supplied weapons at “throwaway prices.”

This post by the Indian Army came just a day after former US President Donald Trump increased pressure on India for importing oil from Russia at discounted rates, despite the ongoing Ukraine war. Trump even threatened to raise tariffs on Indian goods.

Trump’s Tariff War

Just a day before the global trade deadline, while India saw its tariffs hiked to 25 percent, Pakistan’s tariffs were reduced from 29 to 19 percent.

Trump’s Unjustified Move

On Monday night, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned Trump’s move and defended India’s energy trade with Russia. In a strongly worded statement, the ministry called Trump’s move “unjustified and unreasonable.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump doubled down, saying:
“India has the highest tariffs and the most obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers. We’ve done relatively little business with them.”
