India to Cut Prices of 137 Anti-Cancer Drugs by Up to 70% from Nov 9

The CSR Journal Magazine

Cancer medications in India are set to see significant price reductions starting from November 9, 2026. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers announced that 137 anti-cancer drugs will be included in the Trade Margin Rationalisation (TMR) initiative, aimed at making treatments more affordable for patients. This decision follows previous price controls implemented in 2019, which reduced the costs of 42 anti-cancer drugs by up to 90 per cent.

The newly revised pricing structure will affect a range of medicines, including immunotherapy drugs that are utilised for treating over 20 different types of cancer, such as breast, prostate, colon, ovarian, and cervical cancers. The ministry highlighted that the maximum retail price (MRP) of commonly used drugs like Pembrolizumab, Durvalumab, and Osimertinib is expected to decrease, thereby improving accessibility for patients in need of these treatments.

According to the ministry’s statement, the MRP of the identified anti-cancer drugs could be reduced by as much as 70 per cent, contingent on their current pricing. This reduction will be facilitated by capping trade margins at 30 per cent of the MRP, in compliance with the Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO) of 2013. The ministry aims to alleviate the financial burden faced by patients and their families due to the high costs associated with cancer treatment.

Details of the Price Calculation

The calculation for determining the revised prices of the non-scheduled anti-cancer drugs will follow a specific formula. The MRP will be calculated as the price to stockists or distributors plus the applicable Goods and Services Tax (GST). The trade margin will not exceed 30 per cent. For example, if a non-scheduled anti-cancer formulation currently has an MRP of ₹300, the maximum allowable revised MRP would be calculated based on the price to stockist or distributor.

This structured approach to pricing is intended to ensure that patients have timely access to necessary medications without facing excessive costs. The ministry has mandated that pharmaceutical companies maintain current production and supply levels for the listed formulations to avoid any disruptions in availability.

The ministry’s directive also includes obligations for manufacturers to inform the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) of their revised prices within seven days of the official notification. Furthermore, manufacturers are required to make price lists available on their websites and disseminate this information to retailers and hospitals.

Implementation and Consumer Guidance

As part of the implementation process, all retailers and hospitals are instructed to charge the revised prices starting November 9, 2026, and to display these updated prices prominently in their pharmacies and on their websites. This transparency is designed to ensure that consumers are aware of the new pricing structure and can easily access the information they need.

Consumers can also utilise the Pharma Sahi Daam app and the NPPA website to verify the revised prices of the drugs. This initiative aims to empower patients and their families by providing them with the necessary tools to make informed decisions regarding their treatment options.

The overall objective of this price reduction initiative is to improve the affordability of cancer treatments in India, thereby enhancing the quality of life for patients battling this disease. By regulating trade margins and ensuring fair pricing, the government seeks to mitigate the financial challenges faced by those affected by cancer.
