India and Pakistan Agree to Immediate Ceasefire Following U.S.-Mediated Talks

In a significant development, India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire, ending weeks of escalating tensions. The breakthrough came after intensive negotiations mediated by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced the agreement following a “long night of talks”. The ceasefire is about to begin from 5 pm on May 10, 2025.

The ceasefire was prompted by a series of military strikes, including India’s Operation Sindoor, which targetted what it described as terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Pakistan responded with its own operation, “Bunyan Marsoos,” leading to significant casualties on both sides .

US Plays a Vital Role in this Ceasefire

The United States played a pivotal role in facilitating dialogue between the two nations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commended both India and Pakistan for their “wisdom and prudence” in reaching the ceasefire agreement . The international community has expressed hope that this development will pave the way for sustained peace and stability in the region.

As both countries move towards de-escalation, the focus now shifts to rebuilding diplomatic relations and addressing underlying issues that have fueled decades of conflict.

Addressing the media, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, however, said the ceasefire was worked out directly between the two countries and did not mention any US mediation efforts. The next talks with Pakistan will happen on May 12.

“Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) called the Indian DGMO this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 5 pm,” Misri said.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said the government had always strived for “peace and security” in the region.

“Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Dar tweeted.
