India Backs Maritime Security in Strait of Hormuz at UK-Led Talks

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, reaffirmed India’s commitment to ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, especially amidst the rising tensions in West Asia. During a media briefing, Jaiswal highlighted that India advocates for free and open commercial shipping aligned with international law. He mentioned that India has accepted an invitation from the UK to attend discussions regarding the Strait of Hormuz, and India’s Foreign Secretary is scheduled to represent the nation at these talks.

Engagement with Regional Partners

Jaiswal stated that India is maintaining communication with Iran and other nations to facilitate safe passage for Indian vessels carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), and other essential products. He noted that through ongoing discussions, six Indian ships have successfully traversed the Strait of Hormuz without incident. Moreover, the MEA is actively coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure the secure transit of Indian maritime traffic in the region.

Safety of Indian Citizens in the Gulf Region

In terms of the welfare of Indian nationals, Jaiswal indicated that approximately 10 million Indian citizens reside in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, all of whom are reported safe. He also acknowledged that eight Indian citizens have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict, with one person still unaccounted for. The MEA, alongside the Ministry of Shipping and Indian embassies in the area, is closely monitoring the situation to ensure the security and interests of its citizens.

Facilitation of Nationals’ Exit from Iran

India has successfully facilitated the exit of 204 nationals from Iran through the land border to Azerbaijan, with plans for more returns in the upcoming days. Jaiswal expressed gratitude towards the Azerbaijani government for their support regarding this matter. He mentioned that several individuals have already returned home, while others are expected to follow suit soon.

Bahraini Resolution at the UN Security Council

Addressing the Bahraini resolution currently under review at the UN Security Council, Jaiswal stated that India is aware of the discussions surrounding the resolution. He noted that efforts are ongoing among Security Council members regarding the resolution’s text. India remains steadfast in advocating for free and open commercial shipping and maritime security in accordance with international law. Ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz remains a priority for India.

India’s Upcoming BRICS Presidency

Looking ahead, the MEA spokesperson mentioned that India is preparing for its presidency in the BRICS framework, with several meetings scheduled in the coming months. Responding to inquiries regarding the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Jaiswal indicated that details would be shared in due time as preparations are underway. He emphasized that India, as chair, is actively organizing various meetings and will keep the public updated on future ministerial interactions.
