India Assistant Coach Backs Varun Chakravarthy Plan vs West Indies in T20 World Cup

The CSR Journal Magazine

As India prepares for a pivotal T20 World Cup match against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate shared insights regarding spinner Varun Chakravarthy. Following two challenging performances against South Africa and Zimbabwe, Doeschate indicated that the team has alternative strategies for deploying Chakravarthy at his home ground, which he represents in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Despite his recent struggles, Chakravarthy remains India’s leading wicket-taker in the tournament, having claimed 11 wickets in six matches, averaging 13.09 and maintaining an economy rate of 7.20. However, his last outings saw him concede 47 runs while taking one wicket in four overs against South Africa and delivering another modest performance with figures of 1 for 35 against Zimbabwe, resulting in an economy rate exceeding 8.75.

Strategies Against Key Opponents

When questioned about tactics to counter in-form West Indies player Sherfane Rutherford, who is now part of the Mumbai Indians franchise, Doeschate discussed the significance of sharing insights between players. He noted, “Most players from various teams frequently face each other, which allows us to lean on intel from players within similar franchises. Every team is engaged in exchanging information about each other’s strengths and weaknesses.” He highlighted the importance of knowing that every venue in India could be perceived as a home ground for various players, affirming Chakravarthy’s success at Eden Gardens.

Continued Trust in Varun Chakravarthy’s Abilities

Discussing Chakravarthy’s roles in previous matches, Doeschate elaborated, “We have generally utilized Varun as a key bowler during the power play, relying on him as an aggressive option. It has become clear that teams are beginning to adapt their approach when facing him. Therefore, we have developed alternative strategies to employ him effectively across different stages of the game. Overall, he remains an essential wicket-taking asset, and we expect more of the same performance from him in the upcoming match.” The discussions come as the Indian team is poised to make critical adjustments in their approach, underlining Chakravarthy’s integral role in the squad.
