The recent inauguration of the BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir in Paris has been hailed as a significant event in the cultural relationship between India and France. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the gathering via video conference, described this occasion as a landmark that would enhance France’s cultural diversity. He emphasised that the temple is more than merely a religious site; it represents the values of India’s ancient traditions and serves as a global platform for cultural exchange.

During his remarks, PM Modi expressed immense joy about the temple’s inauguration, stating that it marked a pivotal moment in how India and France connect culturally. He highlighted the universal principles of brotherhood and unity encapsulated in the Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, recognising the temple as a venue that embodies these ideals.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the vision of Param Pujya Pramukh Swami Ji Maharaj, acknowledging the ongoing efforts to share India’s spiritual and cultural heritage with the world. He noted that the temple in Paris represents a broader movement that is gaining momentum in various parts of the globe, including Europe, signifying the spread of a cultural renaissance.

Strengthening India-France Ties

PM Modi elaborated on the broader implications of the temple’s inauguration, linking it to the rapidly evolving India-France partnership. He affirmed that both nations are collaborating to forge a Special Global Strategic Partnership, focusing on various fields such as artificial intelligence, defence, and climate action. The Prime Minister also highlighted the upcoming 2026 India-France Year of Innovation, signifying renewed momentum in collaborative ventures.

Moreover, he acknowledged the historical context of the relationship by recalling the contributions of Indian soldiers during historical conflicts on French soil. He recognised the role of French scholars in popularising Indian traditions, particularly in the realm of languages, thus contributing to a longstanding cultural exchange. These elements have significantly enriched the relationship between the two countries.

PM Modi also mentioned the longstanding intellectual and spiritual connections that have existed between India and France, citing notable figures such as Romain Rolland and Srila Prabhupada Swami. According to him, such exchanges have fostered a deeper understanding of each other’s cultures and spiritual traditions over the years.

Architectural and Cultural Dimensions of the Temple

The architectural character of the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir has been described by PM Modi as a blend of traditional Indian craftsmanship and contemporary French engineering. He noted that the materials used for the temple were sourced from India, shaped meticulously before being assembled in France, symbolising a significant collaboration between the two nations.
