IIT-Ropar to Offer MTech in Defence Technology for Army Officers

The CSR Journal Magazine

IIT Ropar has announced the awarding of Master of Technology degrees in Defence Technology to officers of the Indian Army. This decision follows the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Army Air Defence College located in Gopalpur. As part of this initiative, officers enrolled in the Long Air Defence Course will now have the opportunity to obtain formal accreditation through the MTech programme at IIT-Ropar.

Collaboration Enhances Academic and Research Initiatives

The agreement was formally signed by Prof Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT-Ropar, and Lt Gen Amit Rao, Commandant of the Army Air Defence College. The event was reported through an official statement released on Thursday. This current arrangement builds upon a Memorandum of Understanding previously established in December 2022, focusing on academic and research collaborations between the Army Training Command, Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), and IIT-Ropar.

Under the terms of the agreement, faculty members from IIT-Ropar will serve as mentors for the officers. They will provide guidance on dissertations and various research projects undertaken during the course. Access to the institute’s laboratories and infrastructure will also be granted to the officers, contingent on prior approval. Moreover, these officers will have the opportunity to attend seminars and lectures conducted by IIT-Ropar faculty, which will be available in both online and offline formats.

Both institutions aim to jointly advance technological knowledge in areas of shared interest, thereby strengthening their academic and research partnership. This collaboration is expected to facilitate a robust exchange of expertise, ultimately benefiting both officers and the educational institution.

Continuing Engagement with the Indian Army

Prof Ahuja highlighted the significance of this agreement, stating that it marks a pivotal development in the ongoing relationship between IIT-Ropar and the Indian Army. He noted that the faculty and the infrastructure at IIT-Ropar are poised to play a crucial role in advancing the technical education of officers who are at the forefront of national defence. The intention to deepen this collaboration in the years to come has been emphasised as a priority.

Notable attendees at the signing included Lt Gen Surinder Singh Mahal, Managing Director of the IIT-Ropar Defence Research and Innovation Foundation, and Brigadier Rohit Das. Their presence underscores the importance both organisations place on this transformative educational initiative.

IIT-Ropar has been fostering a close working relationship with the Indian Army regarding academic and research cooperation since the inception of the MoU in 2022. The IIT-Ropar Defence Research and Innovation Foundation has been central to advancing this partnership, facilitating various collaborative projects and initiatives.

In summary, this recent agreement signifies a new chapter in the partnership between IIT-Ropar and the Indian Army. It connects academic mentoring, research support, and formal postgraduate accreditation for officers pursuing the Defence Technology programme. The collaboration aims to enhance the educational experience and technical acumen of military personnel, ultimately contributing to the country’s defence capabilities.
