Gujarat is forging new paths for defence, drone, and aerospace startups through initiatives like i-Hub Gujarat and the SanchiConnect deep-tech enablement network. These programmes aim to provide emerging firms with essential resources, including access to potential investors, industry leaders, mentoring, and opportunities to showcase their innovations. Currently, approximately 30 deep-tech startups are being nurtured through these initiatives, allowing innovators to establish crucial industry connections and gain insights into market demands.

Support from i-Hub Gujarat and SanchiConnect

Omnish Adroja, the founder of Villonex Cryogenics, highlighted the benefits of participation in SanchiConnect, particularly the chance to present at the SkyTech Exhibition. He noted that the initiative allowed his company to engage with senior Air Force officials, including the Chief Marshal of the Air Force, as well as to connect with several private firms operating in the defence sector. Such experiences are helping startups understand the defence technology landscape and foster critical relationships.

Paridhi Karmarkar, founder of Durgastra Innovations Pvt Ltd, expressed gratitude for the support provided by i-Hub Gujarat, stating that the organisation has facilitated numerous valuable industry contacts through its various programmes. Karmarkar mentioned involvement in acceleration programmes such as SanchiConnect and Tattvax, which have significantly contributed to the firm’s progress. Additionally, her company has applied for the Srujan Grant, hoping it will further bolster their initiatives.

According to Urvish Mandaliya, additional director of airX Innovations Pvt Ltd, i-Hub has offered extensive assistance via numerous events and startup programmes, including the Urban X initiatives. Mandaliya affirmed that the organisation has been supportive at various stages of their journey, which includes being shortlisted for a pilot project with AMC. This backing is proving vital for the startups as they navigate the challenges of entering the defence sector.

Connecting Startups with Investors and Industry Leaders

The initiatives are also facilitating connections between investors, corporate leaders, and the world of burgeoning technologies. More than 20 industry representatives participated in a recent two-day Demo Day as part of the programme’s second cohort, underscoring the relevance of these platforms in the ecosystem. The i-Hub Gujarat CEO, Hiranmay Mahanta, delineated the significance of the organisation’s Startup Acceleration Programme, which supports firms post-incubation, equipping them to enter the market, attract funding, and expand their operations effectively.

Mahanta elaborated that the flagship programme assists around 30 to 40 startups from diverse sectors every three to four months. The support includes market understanding, investor connections, and strategic guidance, which are crucial for progressing their business ventures. This structured approach is instrumental in facilitating the transition of deep-tech startups from innovative concepts to viable market applications.

Overall, the initiatives represent a concerted effort to foster indigenous capabilities in defence, aerospace, and space technologies within India. By connecting startups with vital resources, mentorship, and frameworks for growth, Gujarat is positioning itself as a key player in the evolving landscape of defence innovation.
