The CSR Journal Magazine

Students and faculty members from IIT Kanpur took part in a special Kanwar Yatra on Sunday, 17 August 2026, as part of the ongoing Shravan celebrations. The event involved carrying holy water from the Ganga at Sarsaiya Ghat to the Anandeshwar Mahadev Temple located in Parmat. Participants engaged in the traditional Jalabhishek ceremony, wherein they offered their devotion to Lord Shiva. This initiative fostered a sense of unity among students, professors, and the broader institute community, highlighting their commitment to cultural traditions.

Professor Nachiketa Tiwari expressed his appreciation for the students’ initiative and encouraged them to consider expanding the event for future iterations. He suggested that the Kanwar Yatra could evolve into a more extensive campaign focused on water conservation and the importance of safeguarding water resources. This reflects a growing trend of integrating traditional practices with contemporary social issues.

Generational Perspectives on Tradition and Technology

Among those participating were Professor Akhilesh Virmani, Aditi Saxena, Ayushi Ojha, and various other students from the institution. Student Shivam Trivedi remarked on the significant role of IITians in the Kanwar Yatra, asserting that this engagement reveals a multifaceted aspect of modern youth. He advocated for viewing Generations Z and Alpha as more than just their interactions with technology and social media.

Trivedi emphasised that young people today can maintain a connection to India’s rich cultural and religious heritage while simultaneously navigating the currents of technological innovation. He highlighted the coexistence of traditional values and modern advancements as a defining feature of today’s younger generations.

In addition to cultural engagement, Trivedi described the Kanwar Yatra as a representation of faith, discipline, and environmental awareness. He noted that initiatives like this can strengthen social bonds and foster a sense of responsibility among youth towards societal challenges.

Cultural, Spiritual, and Environmental Discussions

During the Yatra, Awadh Bihari Mishra addressed the participants, elaborating on the cultural, spiritual, and environmental significance of the Ganga River. He provided insights and interesting facts about the river, highlighting its vital role in Indian culture. This discussion contributed to a deeper understanding of the responsibilities associated with such natural resources.

The participants maintained a disciplined approach throughout their journey, as they walked the route from Sarsaiya Ghat to the temple carrying Kanwars filled with Ganga water. Devotional chants of “Bol Bam” resonated along the path, creating a spiritually charged atmosphere as they approached their destination.

After the Jalabhishek ceremony, Mahant Bal Yogi Arun Puri Chaitanya Ji Maharaj offered blessings to the students, commending their involvement in the event. The programme culminated in devotional chants, prayers, and bhajan-kirtan, effectively marking the conclusion of this spiritually enriching day.
