The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has initiated an expansion of its Digital Literacy & Computational Thinking Concepts for Teachers (DLCCAI) programme with the goal of training 900 secondary school teachers throughout Uttar Pradesh. This initiative aims to bolster digital education within the state and assist educators in incorporating modern technology into their teaching methodologies.

In collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Government and the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), this programme reflects a commitment to enhancing the educational landscape across the region. IIT Kanpur has tweeted about the initiative, highlighting the involvement of participants from all 75 districts within Uttar Pradesh.

The training effort will include six batches, each comprising 150 participants, across an eight-week blended format. The programme features a combination of in-person training at the IIT Kanpur campus, along with online learning components and practical assignments.

Curriculum and Mentorship Focus

As part of the curriculum, teachers will gain knowledge in various areas such as digital tools, cybersecurity, Scratch programming, Python, artificial intelligence (AI), educational technology, and robotics. This comprehensive training is intended to focus on the integration of these technologies into academic practice.

Prof. Ramkumar J., the Coordinator of the DLCCAI Programme, along with Prof. Satyaki Roy, who serves as the Head of the Department and Academic Head for the DLCCAI, and Prof. Vimal Kumar, who is the Professor-in-Charge of the Office of Outreach Activities at IIT Kanpur, are spearheading this initiative aimed specifically at secondary education.

The incorporation of advanced technologies into teaching is expected to significantly enhance the educational experience for students, making learning more engaging and relevant to modern requirements.

Previous Success and Broader Impact

This latest training initiative builds upon the earlier success of a similar programme, which focused on 750 primary school teachers and facilitated technology-enhanced learning for over 10,000 students. The DLCCAI curriculum has made its way into SCERT’s Class 6 to 8 textbooks, potentially impacting around 48 lakh students in Uttar Pradesh.

Additionally, the impact of the previous programme was evident through videos that showcased how last year’s participants applied their newly acquired digital skills. Many teachers were able to use their learnings not just within the classroom but also to generate a broader impact in their respective schools and communities.

The DLCCAI initiative aligns with the objectives set forth in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises the importance of digital and computational thinking in education. By providing teachers with the necessary skills and confidence, the programme seeks to enhance the quality of education through the effective use of technology.
