ICC Suspends Cricket Canada Over Governance Failures, Teams Cleared to Compete

The CSR Journal Magazine

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the immediate suspension of Cricket Canada on Monday after determining significant breaches of its membership obligations. This decision was made during a series of Board meetings conducted in Ahmedabad. The ICC’s action is part of broader efforts to enhance governance in international cricket, support women’s cricket, and bolster competition structures globally.

Despite this suspension, the ICC has stated its commitment to safeguarding Canadian players from the implications of the ongoing governance issues within Cricket Canada. Consequently, national representative teams from Canada will still be eligible to compete in ICC events throughout the suspension.

In order to sustain the growth and participation of these teams, Cricket Canada will maintain access to ICC funding. This funding will be managed through a controlled mechanism overseen by ICC management, ensuring that the funds are allocated strictly to approved national team programmes.

Conditions for Reinstatement and Monitoring Progress

The ICC will provide Cricket Canada with a framework of conditions necessary for reinstatement, aimed at rectifying the identified governance and administrative issues. The ICC Normalisation Committee will monitor the progress in fulfilling these requirements, supported by ICC management. The restoration of membership will be contingent on the Board’s assessment that all stipulated conditions have been adequately met.

During this period, the ICC Board also ratified several recommendations from the Chief Executives Committee. Among these was a proposal to trial the use of pink balls in Test matches, contingent on mutual agreement from both competing teams. This initiative aims to optimise playing time, especially in environments where reduced light may hamper the game.

Furthermore, the ICC plans to research lighting technology improvements for match officials and venues in collaboration with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Match officials will also have access to Hawk-Eye data when evaluating reports regarding illegal bowling actions.

Women’s Cricket Developments and Future Plans

The Board has also approved a qualification pathway for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2028, which will be hosted by the Pakistan Cricket Board. Matches featuring India will be held at a neutral venue to facilitate fair play.

Additionally, plans were endorsed for a global qualifier for upcoming Men’s T20 World Cups, as the ICC instructed management to formalise the structure for a qualifying tournament that will consist of 16 teams. The Board reviewed governance issues in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka as well, with plans for ICC representatives to visit Bangladesh for discussions regarding the electoral process within the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

During these deliberations, ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja and Devajit Saikia have engaged with stakeholders in Sri Lanka to assess the situation there. The ICC also voiced concerns about the expanding influence of franchise cricket and agreed to form a committee aimed at aligning these leagues with the international cricket calendar.

ICC chairman Jay Shah highlighted the discussions and decisions made in Ahmedabad as reflective of the organisation’s commitment to governance, administration, and the international growth of cricket. He noted that the outcomes are designed to ensure that the sport remains fair, competitive, and exciting for fans worldwide.
