Hyderabad Man Killed in Riyadh Airport Attack Was Bound for Madinah With Family

The CSR Journal Magazine

A family trip intended for the Umrah pilgrimage became tragic for a Hyderabad-based IT professional and his relatives following a projectile attack at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 10. Mohammed Yousuf, 46, succumbed to his injuries, while his wife and three children sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment in a health facility in Riyadh.

Yousuf, residing in Mehdipatnam, was at the airport with his family, preparing for their journey to Madinah when the incident occurred. They were reportedly waiting near a check-in kiosk at approximately 3 pm local time when the projectile struck the premises, resulting in severe injuries to Yousuf, who later passed away.

The attack also left Yousuf’s wife, along with their two sons and daughter, injured. All four family members are being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), with reports indicating that one of the sons is in critical condition. This incident has placed the family in a dire situation, compounding their grief over the loss of Yousuf with a pressing medical emergency.

Indian Embassy Offers Support

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed sorrow following Yousuf’s death and conveyed his condolences to the grieving family. In a statement on X, he remarked, “Deeply grieved at the loss of life of an Indian national in the Riyadh attack. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. The Embassy will extend all possible assistance.”

The Embassy of India in Saudi Arabia corroborated that an Indian citizen injured in the assault had died. Officials from the embassy are reportedly in touch with the family to provide comprehensive support, ensuring the facilitation of Yousuf’s mortal remains for repatriation to India.

Officials also expressed condolences and reaffirmed their commitment to aiding the affected family during this challenging time. The embassy’s assistance includes coordinating the logistics for transporting Yousuf’s remains back to India, with strong emphasis on supporting the family’s immediate needs.

Wider Impact of the Attack

This incident not only underscores the tragic loss faced by Yousuf’s family but occurs against the backdrop of a broader attack on Riyadh airport that resulted in multiple fatalities and hundreds of injuries, according to various reports. The family’s intention to travel to Madinah for religious observance was abruptly interrupted by the violent event.

While Yousuf’s family focuses on recovery in the hospital, the embassy continues to coordinate efforts in managing the aftermath of the attack. The immediate priority remains the health and well-being of Yousuf’s wife and children as they navigate this traumatic experience.

As the family grapples with the dual challenges of mourning and medical emergencies, support from the Indian government represents a crucial lifeline during this distressing period. The tragedy has shocked not only the family but also the wider Indian community, which shares in their grief.
