Home Ministry Launches 24×7 Control Room to Address LPG Supply Issues Amid West Asia Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has established a control room that operates continuously to address increasing public anxiety regarding the supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). This initiative incorporates nodal officers from both the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to facilitate real-time fact-checking and assist states and Union Territories with immediate clarifications. The heightened focus comes in response to apprehensions sparked by reports of potential supply restrictions influenced by ongoing events in West Asia.

Meeting to Review LPG Supply Situation

On Wednesday, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan convened a meeting involving Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police from all states and Union Territories. The gathering also included Secretaries from the ministries of petroleum, information and broadcasting, and consumer affairs, aimed at reviewing the current situation and coordinating appropriate response measures. Sources indicated that during this meeting, officials conveyed that the government has enacted the LPG control order, mandating that refineries and petrochemical complexes maximize LPG production while prioritizing supply for domestic household consumers.

Restrictions on Commercial Use of LPG

As part of the measures to secure domestic supply, restrictions have been placed on the distribution of LPG cylinders to commercial entities like hotels and restaurants. However, it was clarified that these limitations do not extend to essential institutions, which includes hospitals and educational facilities. This approach aims to ensure that residential consumers receive adequate LPG supplies amidst rising demand.

Security and Local Monitoring Initiatives

The Central Government has urged states to bolster security measures surrounding LPG supply infrastructure and personnel to protect the supply chain effectively. State authorities have been advised to closely observe the availability and distribution of LPG on a daily basis and to impose stringent actions against hoarding, black marketing, or violations of supply regulations. Furthermore, maintaining law and order has been stressed as crucial during this period.

Public Awareness Campaigns

In addition to these coordination efforts, authorities have been tasked with launching awareness campaigns aimed at reassuring the public regarding the availability of cooking gas. These initiatives are expected to be executed in partnership with oil marketing companies, focusing on countering misinformation and discouraging panic buying behavior among consumers.

Monitoring of Misinformation on Social Media

States have also been instructed to keep a vigilant eye on social media platforms to swiftly address the dissemination of fake news or misleading information that may provoke unnecessary panic. This includes vigilant measures to counter the circulation of outdated or unrelated content that could exacerbate public concern about LPG availability.

Government’s Commitment to LPG Supply

India ranks among the largest consumers of LPG globally, a vital source of cooking fuel for many households. Initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana have significantly improved access to LPG for millions of rural and economically disadvantaged households over the last decade. Officials stated that the Centre will continuously monitor the situation to ensure a steady and uninterrupted supply of LPG for domestic consumers across the nation.
